Subject:   Vacuum Sealer Recommendations?

I have two Food Savers, the upright kind from Sam's, that work so sporatically that I'm ready to change. I had 50 pounds of pulled pork ready to pack and got only 4, 5# bags to vacuum and seal correctly. The rest are in zip lock bags. Any recommendations short of a full blown commercial unit?

I have a Sorbent home model snorkel vacuum.  It is on this page I've had it for 5 years.  It does 2 deer a year and numerous fish.

Yep, I do. Most folks on here do not apparently freeze much ??? Got an upright freezer at my place full of different cuts of chicken, beef, baby backs, veggies,,, and as much ice as it will hold to keep it from running all the time.

I have 2 counter-top small vacuum units. One unit started failing, because it would not hold the vacuum after I sealed a product. I went back to read the directions,, duh,,,,. They both use either 8 inch or 11 inch bag rolls. The problem was me.

The very top of the freezer bag,, the part that is heated by the seal-strip must be COMPLETELY DRY before applying vacuum. If not, it will leak. Use a paper towel to wipe dry both surfaces of the bag before applying vacuum. If you are drawing liquid up from the product to the seal before vacuum, either dry the product more or make a longer bag.

A little secret i learned is to take a paper towel and fold it just above the meat and then seal it. when the liquid is moving torward the sealer it will be absorbed by the paper towel. you can take one paper towel and tear it several times and get about three to four bags out of it. you can also try cleaning the strips. Hope this helps.
