Well, that time is finally approaching.

Anyone recommend a good builder who is familiar with the requirements around the lake.  Log Cabin experience prefered.

I've narrowed floor plans down to two models by Southland.

I have a few questions for a builder who has lake experience.

Allowable construction distances from the lake and how close I can build to the property lines....

I also have an existing septic system and am concerned if it will work with the plans.  Possibly might need one of those new "fancy" pumping systems if the existing tank wont work.  If the pump is required i'm worried about how close it can be to the lake and how it will affect where I want to put the house.

It's good to be back if I haven't mentioned it lately ;)

I would go discuss it with the county building department. As to the septic, I would contact Dale Mask at  (334) 857-3828. He is an expert and a nice guy to work with.

Kenny Hayes is a builder out of Montgomery. He is going to build our lake house soon. He has been building log cabins in Gatlinburgh and Pigeon Forge area. Our septic sytem has been quite a challenge. They have become stricter about the regulations. Kenny also works with a septic engineer out of Montgomery named Speaks. Highly recommend both!!

He built my house for the origional owner (we've been in the home for 12 years)...all I'll say is you'd better keep a close eye on the project (and have some solid building knowledge) or you may be wishing you had.

Mark Davis in dadeville has built many log cabins on the lake including two of my neighbors. He lives in one also and definately knows his stuff.

I, also, will recommend Mark Davis.  He built an addition to my home and did a great job.  I know he has log building experience.  Phone number is 256-825-4956.

I agree with Ulysses. Ask around. In general, a good question to ask builders are if they have been involved in any lawsuits or bankruptcies in the last several years. The more references you check, in any profession, the better, in my opinion.

OSMS - the number is not valid.  Do you have another number?  Is this Davis Construction out of Birmingham?  Thanks

No. Mark lives on Davis circle in dadeville or it may be a jacksons gap address just off of 280. I don't have his number but will get it for you.  In the meantime if you are in the area you can ride by and see his own log cabin there.

That's enough of the d.r. advertising. Tell him if he wants to advertise here to contact Bruce and buy an ad.

Kenny Hayes and his former business partner built our house in town in 1991.  We are not the original owners but moved in about a year and half after it was built.  We've had to replace many things in the house shortly after we moved in in 1993.  A lot of short cuts were made with the a/c and electrical, flooring, etc.  We were remodeling our bathroom several years ago and my husband was almost electricuted because the screw to hold the bath tub faucet was screwed through electrical wiring that was connected to the laundry room.  I would certainly check around.  We were originally going to build a house using Kenny and his business partner but the price of the house kept getting more and more expensive because they "forgot" to add a light fixture over the shower in the master bath and had to charge us a fee to change the plan and then extra for the light fixture.  We could understand the cost for the light fixture but the fee to change the plan and it wasn't our mistake.

Thanks Osms.

Met with Darren this past weekend, he confirmed my septic concerns.  Luckily the existing tank can be "renovated" in whatever way I need for the location I want the house.

Darren also spoke highly of Mark.

I'll reach out to him in the next couple of weekends.

Cool.  Glad to hear the septic system is ok.  Stay away from those $20K "engineered" installations if possible.  Suggest you nail down all contractors asap.  Have no idea if Mark is busy, but I know he's a one at a time kinda guy.  Good luck.
