I have a neighbor here at the lake who has a couple of grandsons, 15-18, who just stand outside and shoot....and we are NOT talking bb guns!  Today alone I bet they have shot 500 rounds.  When the deputy came out several months ago he said they weren't doing anything wrong.

How can this be?????  I live here all the time and am even afraid to let the dog out to go potty.

Any suggestions???

First, I would go talk to the owner and express my concerns. If unproductive, I would reciprocate in kind. My gut would suggest that the owners would be comprising. If not, turnabout is fair play.

Unfortunately, the homeowner is very old and sick as hospice has been called in.

We have a home at the end of Coosa Co 20 in Narrows Point and experienced the same thing weekend before last on both Saturday and Sunday.

Don't be surprised. Depending on where you are some folks live in a development but act like they live in the middle of 100 acres. It's part of the culture. Get over it or move.

Get out your guns (or buy a few if you don't have any)  and join them for target practice

Definitely the best advice so far. Then take the opportunity to introduce them to an even better place to shoot.

Call your local Game Warden. It is against a state law to discharge a firearm within 100 yards of a residence.

Are you sure about that law?  We had a neighbor shoot a snake while the Marine Patrol was there and they didn't mention that being against the law (and the shooter was well within 100 yards of his house).  Maybe they just used their judgment in this case and it is illegal.  Would be interesting to know as maybe its hunting within 100 yards as opposed to discharging a weapon.  Not that it doesn't sounds like a reasonable law but how would it square with self defense in the case of a break in?

If there is such a law, which i don't believe there is, it is most certainly not enforced, nor even enforceable. I used to have a neighbor who liked to get drunk and shoot at night. I called the sherrifs several times. I was told each time there was nothing they could do but ask him to stop. Had he done it in their presence they could charge him with disturbing the peace. I don't care how much any sober person shoots but this guy was a sloppy drunk. In fact me and a couple of buddies did some ordinance disposal last week at the farm. Probably fired 500 rounds or so, within 100 yards of several houses within alex city limits.

Here is the actual law (as it pertains to hunting) from which you probably obtained this misconception.

Hunt within 100 yards of any dwelling without the permission of the owner or leasee or
discharge a firearm while hunting so that any projectile strikes any dwelling or building
used for human occupation, or any commercial vessel, without the permission of the owner
or leasee. This does not apply to a landowner or member of his/her immediate family
hunting on his/her own property provided that no projectile strikes the above property of
another without the permission of the owner or leasee.

Then, I guess, a fireworks display on a holiday, or loud, loud music for an occasional party will be also unacceptable??

Unless you have reason to think they are hostile to you from the get-go, then assume they are just dumb and thoughless, which comes with the territory of being 15-18 and male. But that doesn't mean they would necessarily be impervious to a courteous approach. If by "500" you really mean "500" or anything close to it, perhaps pointing out to them how their conduct is disturbing to you might help somewhat.

But if it were me, I'd concentrate on the noise factor and not the bullet factor, safety factor,  or the whole topic of firearms. In my experience, if you approach them in those terms, too large a minority of firearm owners will assume you are attacking their "rghts" and your problem will get worse. And more intractable.

Just act and talk like it was firecrackers or extremely loud music. We had a loud-radio-music issue wth our neighbors next door, and a combination of reasonable tolerance combined with a sense of humor on our part, along with a courteous and respectful approach, did result in some reasonable limits. The young'uns were simply self-centered and thoughtless. You have to do the consideration part for them, they aren't capable of it all by themselves. But unless theyare truly pathological, they'll hear you.

Calling in law enforcement ought to be a really last resort. It will permanently damage the relationship, even -- especially -- if it works.
