In the Manoy Creek area, why must you leave your dock 400w HPS lights on all night?

I need my sunglasses to sit out on my deck at midnight. So much for the stars.

This fortunately applies to just a few neighbors, looks like they mostly turn the lights

off when they go to bed.

I agree about dock lights. Not only. In your area but all over the lake. They really distract from the beauty of the nights around the lake. If folks would only turn them off when not necessary it would be great.

Hope many folks are reading this.  We have a neighbor in our slough - part timer - who leaves a VERY bright light on a sensor. It stays on all night all week.  He turns it off during the few days he is at the lake.

Totally agree. That's a pet peeve of mine as well as we have an across the slough neighbor who burns one of those orange vapor security lights all night. However, when I saw your title line, I thought you were addressing another pet peeve of mine: Those genuises who run their (primarily pontoon) boats at night with their docking lights on. Inconsiderate as well as illegal, but I suspect that most of the offenders don't have a clue! They think they're just being safe.

Ditto...we have a place in a cove near Pleasure Point. There's a house on Bayou road that has enough lights to start an airport. Totally disrupts the night sky. Wish we had some ordinances to manage light pollution. Less is better..,,,

The super bright lights that run all night seem unnecessary and do ruin the beautiful night sky and the light reflects in the lake detracts from that as well. I see the point of them when coming in late at night on your boat all night long is inconsiderate.  If you want 24 hour a day lighting, live in the city!

Oh, I could write a book. Docking lights, spot lights, inability to understand nav lights or rules of the road (day and night), and yes, bright dock lights. I grow weary of the tone deafness prelevant in our society.

I'm glad the issue of light pollution on the lake is getting some attention. We've had our place since 1962 and I've always enjoyed the dark skies about as much as the daytime activities. It seems this idea that your place has to be lit like a used car lot and all night is a fairly recent development. I understand change, growth and development but without some regulation regarding what's important, the quality of Lake Martin will unavoidably deteriorate. About 5 years ago a guy across the slough from Turner Point improved his boat hour and attempted to light the whole area from the peak of his A-frame house with a light I am sure he got from an aircraft supply house. I can literally do very crisp shadow puppets on the side of my boat house when it's on. I'm thankful that for the past three years he has moderated the use of it drastically...and I've been over thee and can see where he might not realize how big a problem it was. So at least, unless you're needing it right that minute, turn the light off....and don't get me stated on dawn to duskers

The issue needs more attention than just here. Any ideas about where to start with someone who has authority?

Some of you who complain are part of your own problem. KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS people.. meet and Greet. Share a cooler and some burgers. Get to know them early on,, then you can reasonably ask a friend to cut the lights,,, or watch for prowlers,, or tow your boat home...etc

A cool cove is a special thing...

I suspect these people leave lights on to discourage burglars ... I can understand that ... I also understand being aggravated by the lights.

If that is the case, and I can understand it in light of the rash of burglaries in the Parker Creek area this year, suggest the lights be masked so that the lights illuminate the owner's property and not the water and neighbors.  Might be tough to do in congested areas, but worth a try.

I completed a new covered boat lift and was excited to install new lights, especially since I had never had power at our dock.  After the installation, my neighbor politely told me that the lights were very intrusive, especially in their bedroom. I painted half of the globe (facing his house) with black spray paint, replaced the white 75 watt lights with 45 watt yellow bug lights and turned them on only when away in our boat or when on the dock at night.  He was very appreciative and even complimented the glow the lights created....very soothing.  I was also appreciative that he said something.  Communication works.
