We have discussed the one and only stillwaters golf many times and most if not all reports were it sucked.  Got to give credit where it's due. Played there over Memorial Day and I have to say the course is in pretry dang good shape.  Tee boxes, fairways, and most importantly the greens were all in great shape.  Very pleasantly surprised.  Along the wood lines and around the ponds were pretty hairy with brush /weeds but since the game is supposed to be played away from those areas it is not a major thing.  I said "supposed to be".  My only con and totally don't get is the sand traps.  Several had grass/weeds growing in them and since when does any golf course use red dirt in the traps?  I mean how hard can it be to kill grass in a sand trap and how about some white sand....just didn't get that part.  Of course the sand traps are also along the lines "game is supposed to be played away from those".  It was a great day for golf and the course really is worth $48 (weekend).  Kudos to those folks and for u lake folks who want to hit'em....it is safe to play stillwaters now.

OK, progress is being made although there is still a lot of work to be done.  The greens are in the best shape in years although still too slow.  But a big improvement over the last several years.  The fairways are likewise in much better shape.  Far fewer weeds, ant piles are mostly gone and the grass is starting to grow a little better.  Many fewer areas "under repair" which is code for I am not hitting off dirt when I am in the middle of a fairway.  The sand traps are a disaster.....and calling them sand traps is a very generous term to use.  Most of them are mud pits in the center amd heavily eroded on the sides. In a couple of them, we pulled the ball out of the trap.  I guess one step at a time but if they can get the traps back in shape the course will be very playable.

On a side note, we came up to the tee box at #9 (I think) and there was a guy standing on the tee box looking out at the most awfully located tree on a golf course.  He told us he was wondering why that tree was there and we told him it was just wrong.  The hole is a slight dogleg right and the tree is on the left side of the turn and two large sand traps are on the right.  If a player hits a cut there is almost no want to start the ball left as you will hit the tree and if you start it too far right it will cut into the fairway bunker.  Even a draw is a challenge because if you start it over the sand traps on the right side you will probably go through the fairway and end up in the rough.  Two possible solutions:  1) remove the tree; or 2) fill on the traps.  He said he was going to have a golf course designer look at it and make recommendations.  I offered to cut it down for him as I play a cut and find the hole to be poorly designed.

Just joined while the membership drive is ongoing. I played  Sunday and cource was better than i expected. Others i played with said they are seeing improvements and yes traps are horrible. Lets get behind the new owners and give them a try as  it as it will be a plus for those of us in stillwaters. It will be fun to have a good golf course again along with the planned restaurant and possible fitness center.

How does the membership work?

...Grand National.

GN is only $49 on the weekends...and is light years better than SW.

Now, if they bring the weekday prices to to $25 with a cart and $35, tops, for weekends...then I'm listening.

Otherwise, I'll play a top notch course...two top-notch, actually, for the same price.

You have to give people incentive to come and play there, especially when it's not in great shape.
