Has anyone used any of the relative new paints[stains] for restoring wooden decks on exposed boat docks? Home Depot carries two products[one made by Behr called "Deck Over" and one by Rust'oleum called "Restore". They both require two coats. Behr's product is advertised as being four times thicker than regular paint and conceals splinters and cracks up to 1/4inch, while Rust'oleum has one 4x thicker than regular paint and one that is 10x thicker than regular paint. I was on the verge of going with the "Restore 10x" today when I talked to a person that advised me to do a lot of research before deciding what would be best to use. He said he knew someone who had used either the Behr or the Rust'oleum and that it was "chipping" up. He is going to find out  which one  he used. He also  told me about another product by Sherwin-Willams called "SuperDeck". It is a "elastomeric" coating that is a thick, flexible formula that expands and contracts with temperature changes to deliver maximum resistance to algae and mildew, maximum UV protection and lasting color. I am seriously looking into using this product. I will appreciate any information and suggestions.

Please excuse the irregular margins on this post. As I was about half way through the entries started appearing  from right to left. I didn't want to start over, and I am not computer "savvy" enough to know how to correct it on the run.

I used Behr's Deck Over on my swim platform two years ago and it looks as good today as when I painted it.  I also have 2 or 3 friends who have used the same paint with good results.  On my swim platform, I turned 2X6 deck boards over, rescrewed the deck and filled the old holes before painting so the deck looks new.  Paint has not faded.  I know someone who painted with the Restore and he has had some flaking of the thicker paint.  Behr is much thinner than the putty like Restore, but it fills small cracks in the wood very well.  BTW, the coverage with Behr is much better than they quote, at least on my deck.

Rstore 10X works awesome, I had no flaking whatsoever....research if you can find a color that is not boiling in the sun though.  I'm not familiar wih the Behr product.  Oh, and if you use Restore, it might be a good idea to mix buckets together as one of my buckets was just a slightly different shade of the same color.

I'm also considering the Sherwin Williams new product for decks, but will not pay their full price (they're very proud of their product, judging from cost).....they have sales often though, so just look for those.

I used the regular Restore on some steps at a beach house we have and was very satisfied. An extreme salt and sun environment. This was two years ago and it's holding up well.

I also used deckover with good results.....when I rebuilt my floating dock I let the wood cure and put it on there too. I think the sooner you get it on, the better the long term results. My older wood was in fairly bad shape and I will still probably need to replase in a few years.....but deckover definately bought me some time.

This is some very good info. Was just wondering if you can find the screws or nails to replace the deck when it been done with restore ?? I'm taking some decking up now and the screws are fairly easy to find and remove. Not sure we should restore on a deck that's may need replacing fairly soon.

I can see the screw and nail holes in both my new and old boards. You may have to do some chipping out to get to them though.
