 Last year about this time a young woman came by the house and was soliciting money for the Lake Martin Rescue something or the other and told us about the great job they did on the lake helping others. Shortly thereafter there was several comments on the Forum about this type of scam. Frankly I had never heard of them but gave them $20 to further their efforts and also was going to get a nice photo made. We never heard anything else from them.

This afternoon while I was studying the roadmaps on the back of my eyelids a man came by and told my wife he was soliciting money for the same thing and this year they want $40. We do get a free photo also. She didn't give him any money and he said he would be back by the first of next week.

Is this real or a scam?

There are a lot of scams like this that do go on around the lake, so you need to make sure of what you are donating to. Get valid identification of who they are, if legit they shouldn't mind. If something seems fishy, get a licence plat number and picture of the people...ask them to take their photo. Local volunteer fire departments need your donations, but I don't know of any that go door to door. I'm with the Kowaliga Volunteer Fire Department and we encourage donors to make sure their money is going to the right place. We hade people in our district going door to door for money and it was definately a scam. Donations can be made online or directly to the department by check. From my experience, the other departments in the area work the same way.
