So today -- I happened to be here when a guy shows up in a black older model Jeep Cherokee asking for a $40.00 donation to the

LAKE MARTIN SEARCH & RESCUE fund. Having read things from folks in the know on this board-- I turned him down. He had a laminated piece of paper with a lighthouse insignia on it and it had a blurb about how they needed donations of $40.00. He was also wearing a well work shirt with the same insignia on it.  He said he was sure I had seen their boat and I politely told him -- "actually I have not" . I felt like a cad because I normally give to these types of things.... but something was off. So I didn't. Is this thing for real? I saw a FB page but it sure was not very informative. It said they were in a bldg in Jacksons Gap --donated by the City of Jacksons Gap.  Feeling unsure of my first attempt at being stingy.

I did the same thing when he came to our door.  I told him there were scammers out there and asked him for a number to call and all he would give me was an address.  He tried to strong arm me by showing him all the money others had donated and I told him that just because they may have been scammed doesn't mean I should go along.  Then my partner in the house came over and said his wife had already paid something within the last couple of weeks and the guy went on about how that was the old search and rescue and that the Peckerwood S&R recently took over.  Sounded very fishy to me so I sent him off without any money.  You did the right thing.

Why don't some of ya'll call the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Dept and ask if this is a legitimate organization?  If they are legit, the Sheriff's Dept will know all about them.  They do have a facebook page, but that's free to anyone.  Maybe they're just collecting party/drinking money.  Check 'em out.

The organizations are legit, but this comes up every year. IMO the orga izations should ban the door to door collections in a very public way. I was scammed for $100 the first year I lived here. I dont give to any door to door solicitors even when i think they are legit. All i give are my opinion about door to door solicitors.

Has anyone ever seen a Lake Martin Search and Rescue boat anywhere on the lake? I've been here for a long time and have NEVER seen one. I've heard stories about splits from Peckerwood RS and Alex City RS forming this LMSR group. I've seen their FB page but that means nothing. Anybody can start a FB page and it would seem that anybody can say they have started a Rescue Squad.  Since this comes up every year, maybe someone over in their area should request to see some financial records.

My family is retired and lives on the south end of the lake...We DO NOT open the door for people we don't know. You can talk with the door closed .  Don't believe anybody ...

Just had two guys - 1 middle aged and other young - pull up in driveway. Driving a beat up older model Chevy truck - blue.   I thought it was my yard company as they have a similar truck so I opened the door. Truck had a door sign that said Lake Martin Search and Rescue. The older guy was driving.  He grabbed a clip board off the dash and started to get out. I have this fantastic dog that has a very protective sense about him.  If he is uncomfortable about someone he will not let them get near me.  He growled and barked at the guy so he stayed in truck. As he started the spiel I said that I didn't give donations and to have a good day. He shrugged his shoulders and drove off. 

We are located close to Emerald Shores area.

i have know bout them for over 30 years: use to operate out of old peckerwood recue blgd. on peckerwood rd. jackson gap. back in the 80s you got a family picture setting taken there for your donation. there were never improvements done with the money and vol. came and went. when finally imploded they changed names and moved to jackson gap fire dept. i never give cause you never see the same people. they were by my place last week in a blue pick up with beer cans in the back bed. tried to play the old heart song they would come recover my body if i drowned, told them i would dead and didnt care who recovered it. you havent read anything about them in the paper in the past, all they do is ask for donations. they never publish any type financial report. i dont even know how to contact them
