I have a 2005 60 Hp four stroke Mercury that only shows 12.2 volts then it will show 13.4 or so and some times it goes from 12 to 13 volts. I don't know anything about the charging system on these motors but does it have a voltage regulator that could be going bad? If so what does it look like and where is it on the motor? Thanks for any help.

Just an FYI.... Not that you need it, but I have a 2015 Merc. 60hp 4 stroke with 1hr on it for sale.  Warranty until 5-1-18.  5500.00.  And check your voltage output with a volt meter, with the engine NOT running, as compared to RUNNING.  Forget the gauge on the dash for now until you have that reading.

Steve I will check that this weekend. What should the readings be each way? But not interested in a 60hp but what do you have in a 90 or 115. This motor probably only has about 3 to 400 hours on it. Motor runs great but would like to move up after getting a hand on this charging issue. You fixed the bottom end seal and I got the 4 blade prop. Thanks John

I took the small rubber plug on the line from the voltage regulator and got between 12.8 and 13.4 form idle to half throtttle. I think the gauge is going bad or sticking. How much should voltage drop with red/green and overhead white light on ? I might have a voltage drain from the squirrels maybe chewing on wires. They have chewed the stereo wires and the vacumn line for speedo that I have had to fix. The light are not LED but just regular bulbs. Can I replace with LED bulbs without changing light fixtures. Thanks John

Your charging system is just fine.  Those are good readings and output.  I would say the gauge on the dash is tellin' you a fib.  As to the lights, and draw, With the engine running, your output should still be higher than 12 volts.  With the engine OFF, you will be 12 or less.  -/+

Thanks Steve. Going to replace voltmeter with a digital one, it will not match bu will give better readings. Can I change to LED lights without changing the light fixture?????  What do you have in line of a larger motor like a used 90 or 115 4 stroke. Thanks John
