Hopefully someone will have a relationship with Tallapoosa Health Department? Thanks to Lake Watch for their work!

Received a response from ADEM on my compaint.  They forwarded for investigation to Amy Baker Tallapoosa Health Department.  Anyone with a relationship with her please forward our concerns and press for an appropriate response.

Laker, the second set of bacteria tests showed pretty much the same results...high levels of E. coli downstream from the RVs located inside the fence on Mullican, and nothing significant coming from upstream above the 49 bridge or Buck Creek.  Of course, there are several places in that stretch that could be suspects.

The issue has been reported to ADEM by another Forum member, and we are awaiting a field inspection...either by ADEM or ADPH. From past experience, this may take awhile.

Thanks, Dick Bronson/Lake Watch

I drove by there today and it seems to be down to one RV.  Not sure if they are moving out on their own or what is happening.  Still a pontoon boat, grills, etc. on the property.  It is a pretty strange little spot.

They were there this weekend.... as they are most weekends. As I stated before -- that land is for sale; however the people who own it are leasing ( I guess) to these people. This is the second summer they have been there and as far as I have noticed that RV stays there. I never see it moved out. They have added things over the months.  Last year on the other side of Mullican, on the smaller creek - just across from that debacle -- there was a camper last year and they built a stone wall and it almost looked like they were going to live there forever-- but then it got taken down and now there is just an older RV sitting there on the land ... but I have never seen anyone at it. Maybe we should take some of the water and dump it on the owners of that land -- they live in Stillwaters. I bet they wouldn't like it much if it was upstream from them. GROSS!

I posted about this mess when the septic system/holding tank was going in.  I called and talked with Amy Baker about the fact that if there were field lines, they are going directly into Sandy Creek.  She said she had to issue the permit because the property address had been approved many years ago (1985??).  I told her that this was a large tract of land which has a house on Hwy 49 and that the previously approved septic system  was probably for the house located on 49 quite a distance from the creek.  She seemed irritated by the conversation and told me bluntly that there was nothing she could do.  Obviously, the RV'ers there could do no more damage if they just pooped in buckets and tossed it into the creek...that's where it's going anyway!

Bigfoot, who is Amy Baker?  Is she with the county?  Seems fairly simple if tests show the property is polluting the lake then the owners must clean it up or risk loosing it through imminent domain laws.  Or fines & liens on the property.  This sounds and appears far more concerning than conditions at Pleasure Point.  Maybe an "ivestigative news" story by a TV station would bring the necessary attention to the situation.  A letter writing campaign to the property owners is a good place to start with copies to their neighbors might bring some action.  All concerned should get the name and address of property owner and express their concerns.  Please keep posts coming with further info.

Bt, let's not over-react before we've let the proper authorities do their job.  Let Amy and her supervisors look at the problem (again), and then maybe your suggestions are appropriate.

The tests I conducted are pretty darned good and are great indicators of bacterial contamination from warm-blooded animals. But they are not as accurate or conclusive as tests conducted under laboratory conditions. That's for the pros.

Thanks for your interest.

Thanks, Dick.  The Lake Martin community owes you and your group a great debt of gratitude for the work done now and in the past.  Perhaps my post was laced with the frustration I felt when told that having been approved in a prior year was the overriding factor in issuing a current permit.  She may have been referring to the location across the street adjoining the creek flowing into Sandy but I suspect that it was for the house on hwy 49.  Thanks, again, for the hard work on your part gathering and dealing with the facts and not supposition as I am sometimes prone to do.  I have two places in the Sandy Creek area (Max/Gunter area and Sandy Cr. Est) and worry about that situation at the bridge everytime I go in the water.  As you pointed out, there could be other sources of contaminants but the important thing is for a proper investigation to be completed.

How far "downstream" is "downstream"? I tend to operate predominately in the Sandy Creek area.

One can sometimes find interesting information on the Tallapoosa County GIS Maps.  Link below:

If I added correctly, Tallapoosa County says the owner of this property has holdings in the county amounting to $1,975,748 for tax purposes.  Plese advise if I'm off base.
