I've been watching the level teeter-totter up and down within an inch today. Since rainfall is not currently a factor, I suspect that they are balancing Martin while alleviating Harris (Wedowee), which reached full pool December 27th.

According to day-end data, there have been 83 days Lake Martin has been above 490 Datum since 1970. The last time was June 19, 1989. The hightest was 490.8 Datum on April 13, 1979. Most of those 83 days are fractions over 490.

If you look at the Martin charts, you'll see a similar rain event at the end of 2013 but the level rose just 4 feet. It took 12 days to lower 4 feet back to 480 datum.

April '79 was when the dam overflowed and washed the bridge out. Today that same .8 ft would most likely translate into several feet over 490.

Lifer, before you scare folks, remember that the max level in history was in the middle of April when the lake was already almost at full pool.  AND, Lake Harris had not been completed yet so that event has no bearing on current situation.  Lake Harris is currently releasing water at about the same capacity as Martin would if all four generators are running so Martin has water coming in as fast as it's being released.  Harris will go down quickly, then Martin will start down.  Read today that some release from Martin flood gates is occurring.

All correct info OSMS. I wasn't meaning to scare anybody but folks on here do tend to be a little reactionary. I didn't get my point across very clearly either. What I meant to get across is that the same or similar circumstance today might result in the lake rising well above 490 now whereas back then it was basically impossible for her to flood because of the overflow issue that existed back then. It has since been resolved. Although this has been a substantial flood it is still nothing compared to '79. I remember it well.  That winter/spring was very wet. I lived between the Talladega and Tallasahatchee creeks less than a mile from where they emptied into the Coosa. For several days I wouldn't even drive across the creek bridges to go into Childersburg for fear of a washout. Both of this bridges were replaced shortly after that. I have full faith and confidence in APCO/SOCO to properly manage the flood waters to minimize negative impact throughout the system.

We're having fun with all the trees floating down Sandy.  Pulled a fifty footer out of the boat house, and pushed a couple of old rotten tree trunks off the property this afternoon.  It's been several years since the creek banks got a good flushing, but they ought to be clean now.
