The original idea for the Florida Lottery at least was to use excess money from this gambling format for development of education in Florida. Worked great for several years. Then, every educational slick came pleading his case for some of the goody. And true to form, a ready source of money was sucked dry immediately. Florida now has a school funding crisis and has already layed off teachers.

On Monday, I wish that I had a chance to gamble for $900 Billion, but on Tuesday I am suspicious that it is a huge $900 Billion SCAM.

Give a government body, any body, a chance to screw up a good thing, and it will do so. Joined the Alabama PACT Fund early on with a contribution that the State Treasurer's Office was supposed to micro-manage into a fully payed tuition for my grandson at any state college beginning 2022. Great deal. Fully pre-paid tuition for college starting in 2022. Happy Days!!

Nope. Financial wizards in Montgomery hung tight while the Market crashed, along with the PACT Fund. My original investment of $22K will probably be worthless, and my retreat is prohibited.

Government is involved heavy in Lottery sharing. Not my dollars, ever.

I lived in GA for 20 years and the lottery was a real benefit. My youngest son had 90% of his tuition paid for because of good grades. My wife was an educator and her pay was 2X what she would have made in Alabama. We have retired and moved back home to bama.

If I want a lottery ticket all I have to do is drive 30 minutes to the state line in Florida and buy my booze for a third less than in state. If I want to gamble I can drive one hour to Mississippi. I don't hear anyone where lotteries and gambling are legal complaining at all.

Why give the money to the Indian reservations? I don't get it?

I have seen many laborers every payday hit the Georgia lotery and throw away money that should be spent on groceried, rent and kids. It is a terrible, terrible tax on the poor. The lure of something for nothing. They called it the Red Neck Retirement fund. I know you can't fix stupid but you don'y have to help irresponsible behavior.

I also believe that democracies should not be in the gambling business. It is too corrupting and our reps don't need any help there!

My son has a GA Tech Engineering degree.....100% tuition paid from lottery money. People are going to find a way to gamble, and the state of Alabama is stupid for not taking part because some people perceive it as a moral issue.

You can agree or disagree on the residuals of the vice. That said, Other than a casual drive to other states, it is here and here to stay. My point is we should at least utilize the industry to create revenue to help the state and provide jobs to help the poor. Right now we are cheating our children on education and in state opportunities.

Personally I enjoy the occasional lottery ticket and casino gaming. It's my money and my choice. I don't need the government to regulate my personal decisions. Within reason of course.

For those who choose to throw away more than they can afford.....there's no cure for stupid.

yep, the only downside I see is giving the money to other states and casinos when it could be put to good use for the state of Alabama.

Alabama needs to think more about keeping revenue in the state and less about regulating people's moral decisions.

Yes, it is true that there are people who are going to play the lottery or gamble when their money would be better spent, say on a retirement fund, but they weren't going to do that anyway.  Might as well let the state profit from their stupidity and their "desperation thinking".

It's very interesting how many try and tell you how to make money and how to spend it. Seams to me if it was that easy they would all be multi-million aires. If someone wants to blow a BUCK for a chance to win how is it your business? Next time you BLOW $3.50 for a BEER, let me know how much you won. How's that working out for ya?  Lol

BTW :  Won't be long !

Alabama: the only state that elected a Governor whose main plank was the institution of a state lottery... and then voted against the lottery once he was Governor.

This is a remarkable example of ridiculous whether you are pro-lottery, or anti-lottery...
