I heard yesterday that the deal has been done but the timeframe hasn't been completely worked out yet. It will definitely change the area.

That's good news. Publix is generally higher priced than Walmart but lower then Winn Dixie. They do run good specials. It is definately a more pleasant shoping experience. The fried chicken is great and bakery is usually very good.

If this is true I may never have to go to Opelika/Auburn again. Would be fantastic!

Hope you are right on that Lifer.  That would be great.

Now all this smoke around the Parker Creek area today, that is not great.  I guess all those prescibed burns do some good but I don't like em

Happy news indeed!  I keep hearing different stories of what it is going to be located.  One story was by Taco Bell on 280, someone elsie said that's why they are clearing land a mile or two south of Taco Bell on 280.  I hope they have the same standards as they do for their store in Montgomery and in Auburn.  I notice that Winn Dixie is dropping their prices, but gvien the poor selection, it hardly matters.

This has been rumored for a few years-will it ever come to be?

I don't think Alex City can support four grocery stores.  I have been wondering why Winn-Dixie has been lowering their prices.  I do like their meats.    Public would be a nice change  - they have a larger selection, even though their prices are higher.  Now, if only we could get some different large chain restaurants, like Applebee's, etc.

I think they may be hopeful that with the development along 63, the demographics might support an upscale grocery store.  Perhaps they think that maybe it will put the Alex City Winn-Dixie out of it's misery.  (Please don't burst my bubble.  I drive to Montgomery weekly to shop at Publix and Costco)  The most recent rumor is that the property for Publix has been bought.

As far as restaurants - almost any would be a welcome addition for some variety.  Not a huge fan of chain restaurants, but a few new ones will be a change and relief from the never ending fast food drive thru fare.  I was really sorry when the pizza restaurant in Alex City folded, only to be replaced with another Mexican food restaurant.  the good thing about a chain restaurant is that they seem to be able to stay in business.

I hope this is true...I love to shop at Publix! We stop by our local Publix in Birmingham every time we are on our way to the lake. We have gotten spoiled on their Boar's Head deli meat and cheese...rarely eat any other brand! Their bakery is also top notch and they most always have everything I need. I have been known to drive all the way to Auburn when we'd be at the lake for a week or more. Foodland in Dadeville will suffice on some things but the Publix produce is very fresh with a great selection. And their rotisserie chicken...yummy...add some long grain & wild rice, steamed vegetables, rolls and tea and you've got a healthy, delicious meal in quick fashion. Great when you've been out on the water all day...AND if Poplar Dawg's isn't open on that particular night! Oh, and they (Poplar Dawg's) use Boar's Head meats for all their sandwiches!

We had a Winn Dixie in Chelsea, then a Walmart. Publix came right in and now we have an Applebee's. I don't think Chelsea is as big as Alex City but the through traffic helps the Publix. Should be even better for the Lake traffic and Auburn traffic.
