i watched one yesterday near the narrows creeping along maybe 5mph and a kid standing on a board with a slack rope in his hand. Are these kids afraid of a little speed with a slalom on their feet cutting across the wake. How much fun is standing on a board 10 feet behind a boat. I guess that's just the cool thing to do.

I think what you are seeing is wakesurfing.  It is done at very slow speeds and if done right they shouldn't have to hold onto a rope at all.

I think his point is "why is that more fun than busting it along on slalom or wake board"?  I think it is just the newest thing, but it sure does increase the wake.

Yes, one of my neighbors has a 1970's vintage Nautique that they enjoy slalom. Remembering the fun of zipping throught the wake makes an older guy like me want to do it again but my back and knees would not like it. Oh and the purpose of the inboard Ski Nautique in that day was it created almost NO wake!

Safe & legal  BLockade works well.  Need some assistance from neighbors but is effectiive.  if you are occupying a place first where they want to go....oh well they will move elsewhere.

Well you and are old fogies because I agree with you.  But my kids love to wake surf although they also wakeoard and slalom.  I think its very appealing to not be holding onto a rope to move through the water.  But again I do not wake surf or wakeboard in areas where there are homes and docks.

Not been my experience.  In the areas where we wake surf (specifically because it is an open area with no homes) those who are floating tend to move on when someone is surfing or wakeboarding.  I specifically avoiding floating in those open areas because I know they are suitable for wake surfing and wakeboarding and the waves are too big for comfort.  Lots of places to drop anchor and float that quiet and peaceful.
