The minnows around my dock are biting swimmers. Not just a tiny nibble but a bite. Drawing blood. And they zero in on a nipple or a mole. What is this? Never happened like this in my 25 years. Any ideas??? (Besides stay out of water)

Nothing new to us.  Any time you get in shallower water where it's warm we have to deal with the nibblers.  They will go for anything that looks like food, hair, moles, etc.

These buggers are not nibbling. They are ripping skin, and that is very different from minnows that barely touch.

We have never seen them either but we met them in Parker Creek when we took a quick dip.   We live on Sandy Creek and have never seen them... or even heard of them. I did not get nibbled -- but my son in law had a zit on his back that they rather liked. And they kept at him until he got out.  If you need debridement it's a good way get it done.

Those biting devils are also swimming in the Alabama River. My son reports that he started using BandAids on his nips and it seems to work. Skinny Dippin is out!!

Always shower before you go for a swim so you don't smell like fish bait. And, don't wear any jewelry as it can attract fish. Finally, make certain you don't have any WD-40 on your body.

An old myth is that WD 40 is made from fish oil and some swear that spraying WD 40 on their bait attracts fish. The truth is that WD 40 is a petroleum base. I tried it once and no fish.

Rub catfish bait on your buddy's legs and arms and enjoy your swim.  It's like having a scuba knife when you dive in salt water.  It offers no defense against sharks but you can juke your dive buddy with it and you can swim back to the boat while they go after him.
