I have a friend with Dish TV and he loves it.  I tried it for a couple of years and it didn't work for me.  I have a heavily wooded lot and had to put the dish 250 feet on a telephone pole.  It lost the signal constantly, rain, wind, high humity, low humity, anything and everything caused it to loose the signal.  I'm with Troy Cable now and everything is fine, actually better than Com Link.  As far as Dish & Direct,  Dish is cheaper.

We had DISH in B'ham and Charter here before we moved.  When we moved, I let DISH put a pole in my yard. (I won't have one on my roof.)  Installer said, because of all the trees, I would not be able to get HD. I believe it's a different satellite.  That's fine with me.  We used it off and on along with Charter for a few months before I cancelled DISH.  I don't like being without TV during storms or sometimes just a good rainfall as we were during the April 11 storms.  We were about a mile from the tornadoes that morning.  I do like their remote a lot better than Charter's.  You can create your own lineup of channels.  With Charter, we get both Birmingham and most Montogmery local channels; with DISH you will only get Montgomery.  My son-in-law has Direct and he swears by it.  I find it clunky to use.

ps We were using our older DISH equipment so I can't comment on the newer stuff

I've had both direct and dish.  Currently with direct for about 4 years now and love it.  Left them for 24 hours in the spring and went back to charter because I needed Internet.  Hated every minute of the 24 hours.  But when I called to cancel direct they made me a really sweet couldn't turn down offer.  I Rarely loose service due to weather and when I do it is only for very short periods. I watch almost everything except news on DVD so the outages don't bother me. I rarely watch weather except from the porch or out the window but if I do check it I use my phone. Directs technology is head and shoulders above  cable in the lake area. Using the double play feature you can watch two live broadcasts simultaneously and not miss a minute of either show. This feature is not just a split screen.  You can pause one and come back k and pick up right where you stopped.  I've used this feature during live breaking news a few times.  Allows me to get two perspectives on the same event.

One kudo I will give charter is they finally fired the fat ugly biatch that worked the counter at the AC office. They still have inferior service and product but at least you don't have to deal with FUB anymore.  I hate that Tony Goss dropped out of the mayors race as he was working very hard to bring competition to charter in AC.  Nobody else seems to care.

P. 'S. ,  if you go with direct  you can contact me and I will give you a code that saves us both $100.

I signed up with Dish several years ago, but they couldn't reach the satellite. They said their satellite is very low on the SW horizon and they couldn't get over my trees.  I have Direct and it's been excellent.  After your contract period they will negotiate as Laker said.  You have to threaten them, but they cut my bill about $40/mo and no contract.

I've had both dish and direct and currently with direct. Had comlink for a few months during construction last winter. I'll always have satelight over cable because of what lifer said....technology, format, and programing beats all cable available in my area  by a BUNCH. The outages are a very minor point and also very rare if the dish is pointed peoperly without obstructions.
