Found this gov report on the floods of 1979 where I understand 4 to 5 inches of rain fell on Lake Martin in 2 hours. It is a long technical document, but on about the third or fourth page are pictures of the old bridge below the dam on hwy 50 being washed away.

That's interesting -- wow that bridge looked rickety!

I get a punch on my "old timer" card because I crossed that bridge many times growing up.  It was rickety, and I am surprised that it survived as long as it did.  We worried about crossing that bridge when the flows were normal.  It was very narrow, too.  The trip down the the winding road on the Elmore County side could be scary as well.

I had just gone across that bridge less than a week before it washed out

We crossed the bridge about an hour before it washed out. We drove from Castaway Rd to take pictures of the dam spillways, which were of course all open, and came back across the bridge, walked out on it and took pictures of the water rushing beneath. By the time we got to the now Eagle Convenience Store, on 229, we heard the bridge was gone. We turned around and went back and took more pictures of the river minus the bridge!  We had probably been on the bridge, no more than 20 minutes before it washed out. (Not something I like to think about now) I have pictures of my dad standing on our dock which was underwater. Quite a day!
