Dogs beware in my neighborhood. This past weekend I arrived home to find two large dogs in my chicken yard. They had torn two sheets of plywood off the side of the chickenhouse and chewed through the dogwire and chickenwire. They proceeded to kill 53 of my 55 hens. I got a good look at the two dogs and hit one of them with my .22 rifle. These hens were laying between 28 and 46 eggs a day. To replace these hens will cost me over a thousand dollars plus the cost of the repair to the coop. I'll be out of the egg business for at least 6 months. If you love your dog, don't let it come in my yard.

I understand your position (takes food off table) and see way too many strays and have adopted several and unfortunately

the supply exceeds the demand. Dogs owners should be set loose deep in woods to survive on cold

Winter night.

Wow.  Hate to hear that Maddog.  Mad dogs beware, Maddog is not happy.  Nor should he be.

Hope you get some resolution to that soon.

I will never understand people letting their dogs roam all over the place. Or having a dog they don't want to take care of.  And once they taste blood that's it. I have no doubt you will see at least one of those dogs again. Sorry that happened to your hens.   :(

Maddog,

We have a pack in the Bay Pine area.  Big black Lab like dogs.  Are you in the area?

I am wary of bringing my new dog up to the lake because I don't want her to follow her hound dog nose off into the woods and get lost.  She seems to want to stay near me, but I want to be careful until she has more lake experience.

Whistle GPS Pet Tracker. Look it up.  Not expensive and works great.  I have on both of my dogs and no longer worry (well not too much) about them running off.

Zman.....I'm in the Sandy Creek area off of Young's Ferry. BTW, with the help of a friend, I have located the dogs. I left a note on their door but have not heard from them yet. These dogs have caused problems in the neighborhood in the past. The owners are well off but don't seem to give a rat's a$$ about what their dogs do to other people or other people's pets. Updates to follow.

Implement the triple S control method. Shoot, shovel and shut up. I'm a dog lover but killers are killers. Like someone above said, you ain't seen the last of them. I would demand damages, including lost income, and if they don't pay take them to small claims court.

My suggestion is you enlist him to scare them off with a handgun.  Let's see if he reads this and tells one of the funniest stories I have heard in a long time.  Either way, get him to scare them off with a handgun and all your problems are solved.

By the way, where are you off Youngs Ferry?  My house is in Sandy Creek Estates.  You in here or further out?

Lets just say, from experience in the past, that you have every right to shoot and kill the dogs. I think if you shoot about six feet to the right you still hit the dog.   For me that is very hard, but I do it when a dog kills my chickens.  It happened 4 times this year alone. And 4 dogs killed.  My wife and daughter cry when the chickens get killed, and cry when I shoot the dogs.  It's a NO WIN situation.  It is crazy to even be put in that situation at all.  I have begged and pleaded with my neighbors and told them I didnt want to do it, so please do not put me in that situation.   Chickens are considered livestock.  Also, the dog owners are responsible financially. Just call the Sherif and they will help you.   Normally we pay around 30-40bucks for hens.  For some crazy reason they get names and we become very attached to them.  Heck, they even have a heat lamp in the coop.  LOL.  When I die, I want to come back as one of Dee Dee's chickens.

If you ever learned how to cook, those chickens would never have a name or be taking your place in DeeDees arms!

I'm really sorry you are suffering as a result of irresponsible pet parents.  It make those of us that try to be responsible angry.

MM....I'm off of Point Cloxson not too far from you.

BTW, with the help of a friend, I have located the owners. I've been by their place and left a card requesting a call back (have not heard from them yet) and I've called and left a message on their phone. They are parttimers and have a home in the Auburn/Opelika area. I'm a fulltimer and will find them at one place or the other.
