I have AT&T and agree it is not very good at all at the lake.  Can't comment on Sprint but have been told by visitors with Verizon that it works pretty well.  All the carriers are raising rates.  I just got one from AT&T.

We are in the Parker Creek area and have Verizon with good service....although we rarely venture past chimney rock so can't comment on the part of the lake from there upstream toward Hiway 280.

Sprint will work east of Anchor Bay and west of the dam if I go out to the end of my dock and hold my phone about 7.5 feet in the air facing due north.  Do those things and it is pretty reliable.

Changed to Verizon from AT&T years ago and have had no problems anywhere on lake

Haven't received a rate increase recently but watch out for data usage, unexplained increases from time to time

I have been with PagePlus for over 8 years. Verizon towers, much lower costs. You need a Verizon phone to connect. Works great for my family.

I use Verizon here on Parker Creek and service is pretty good, and cruising as far away as Chimney Rock is the same. We pay about $90 per month for 2 smart phones and a tablet. Unlimited voice/texting. 2Gig data limit.

However, my sister visits often with her S6 and Walmart Straight Talk.. unlimited everything. $45. Just as good as my Verizon. Hers at 3G.

Had Verizon for years and years and get good service here at the lake, and just about everywhere else we go in the U.S.  Sprint and AT&T  have such terrible customer service, I wouldn't even consider them.  But I am kinda ticked right now at Verizon for them telling me that if I went to their new program I would save money.. that has not proved true.

I agree it's been poor for a long time, but I noticed this weekend (April 1-2 and NO this s not an April Fool joke) our AT&T Service finally delivered a strong and consistent signal upstairs and down all weekend long, with very reliable and clear voice and data service. It was good enough to use my iPhone as a Wi-Fi access point for my iPad -- very good data throughput (our cable modem died so was unavailable this weekend.)

I'd love to think AT&T fixed or added something and it wasn't some kinda fluke. Parker Creek area...
