Mr Trump had indicated that policy could change, suggesting the US should not abide by One China unless it secured concessions from Beijing on trade.

He is picking his battles.  There is nothing to be gained by abandoning the one China policy right now - but when they need China to co-opt North Korea, if they don't agree they may find there is not paper tiger.  China may talk tough, but they are scared to death that the U.S. would publicly acknowledge Taiwan and start providing them with offensive weapons.
