Getting ready to redeck my pier. Any suggestions on a coating that reflects heat and is easy to apply? Also looking at using Trex. Good or bad for reflecting heat?

We have composite and it probably gets hotter than Yellawood.With that being said however, no splinters , no maintenence and should last a lifetime.

Trex is bad heat wise.  just rede led my pier and will put Thompson's Clear sealant on once cured.  I am going to buy a cheap sprayer when ready.  My thoughts.

We put a PVC planking over structually sound 2" old school treated decking.  Satisfied.

Trex is a composite board. It will not help at all to put a clear stain on it. It wont accept stain, The lighter grey deflects heat better than red but is still more heat deflective than yellowwood with clear stain. I have built hundreds because I build them for a living I should know.

Should have said re-decked with wood.  Neighbor 2 houses up has composit on small floating pier.  I went on it in bare feet one day in July .  Won't do that again.

What is PVC planking? I'm not sure I understand what type of product you have used. I am getting ready to re-deck and would like to know a little more detail about what you have done. Thanks!

Yellow Pine for decking is graded Standard and Prime. Spend the money for the Prime which has far fewer knots. I did a porch which was 32ft wide and used one piece down the middle perpendicular to the other boards and then ran 16 footers with no cuts. Beveled the 16 footers with a slight bevel so there was no blunt 90% end where it met the perpendiculr piece. Makes a very attractive deck.

We have light brown Trex on our deck and it gets DANGEROUSLY HOT on some days.  We have to hose it down before use in mid summer and doing so creates a steam bath temporarily.  It's HOT!

  The coatings that are applied with a roller is expensive and labor intensive. They look good/ok for a short time (year or so).  Then they start to blister and peel. It is really a eye sore then. 

  The trex and other composite decking is not maintence free as it is advertised. Most require you to wash and treat every 3-5 yrs.

  After many years on the lake the best and most durable is wood that you scrub clean and never pressure wash.  after washing let it dry days and coat with a quality wood perservative.  But never never pressure wash it.

Do yourself a favor and use 2" lumber instead of 5/4 deck boards, especially if your joist are on 24" centers. Extended life, less maintenance, and better look justify the extra expense IMHO.
