Just saw this application by Parker Creek Marina to put 5 rental trailers at their site.

https://elibrary.ferc.gov/idmws/common/downloadOpen.asp?downloadfile=20170404%2D5134%2832078010%29%2Epdf&folder=1632553&fileid=14546815&trial=1

The comment period may be now.

Herb told us near the end of last season that he was going to put in five upscale "Mini-homes" like those that are the rage among some these days and featured on HGTV.  And yes, rentals and technically trailers.

The trailers have 357.5 sq ft of heated living space, and yes, the photo proves they are trailers......complete with wheels!  Interesting that APCO forced Maxwell Gunter to remove it's "permanent" trailer renters, and forced Pleasure Point out of business for having the same renters, but looks like they've opened the door for more of the same in Parker Creek.

How ridiculous. What harm does it do you. Not everybody can afford to live here but can vacation here if there are places like what he is doing for them to rent. You need to compare apples to apples. Maxwell was shut down by maxwell, not APCO or FERC. It was done because they were in violation of their charter and got busted by the new commander when he came to enjoy a weekend with his family and saw the permanent set ups that were they denying everyone equal access. Pleasure point was shut down for septic issues, not because it had trailers. Check your elitism dude. Those places will be a valued asset to those that rent them. If you don't like it move, and I say good riddance.

The only possible objection might be sewage related but have you objected to the huge houses being built closer to the water than these dinky trailers?  Lifer hit the nail on the head.  Don't try to dream up a nonexistent controversy.

I am in agreement with lifer.  Didn't they have few trailers before?

I have finally found common ground with Lifer except I never could visualize WIX as an elitist deplorable. WIX, you need to apply for a Bellman's job so you can welcome all the weekend socialists who will come to enjoy themselves with their socialist families. You might even meet a minority. And, you might even meet some Trumpsters.

We started camping on Lake Martin when we lived in Birmingham. Moved North and eventually returned to buy a place on the lake. Loosen up buddy and welcome others to enjoy the lake. Share paradise and quit complaining.

There were 8 to 10 (memory chek) camper trailers, side by side , right at water edge where the present day Eastern edge of the Landing Property is located now. More were located further up the hill along the entrance road, and all were "temporarily" permanent. That means you could hook up and be gone in short order. (Gotta leave the new deck though)

We used to cruise by PC Marina on Friday afternoon and watch these folks arrive to their places. Droves of kids, dogs, grills, radios, coolers, picnic tables and trailered boats tied up in front. Looked like the beach in the movie "Jaws". It was a JOY to even watch it develop. And, they enjoyed every minute on the Lake until Sunday departure.

I just wanted to pass this memory along. It is a good one to me, and is pure Lake Martin.

You really had it going with lot's of support, but.....

1.  You are dead wrong on why Maxwell and PP had to remove their permanent renters off APCO land.  Go back and look at land use maps for the license APCO was issued by FERC in the 70s and you will see both facilities were approved for recreational campgrounds, not for permanent use.  APCO Had to clean up their act before the new license could take effect.  Maxwell Rec Area did have a change in supervision, but it wasn't base commander, and APCO had a little talk with him and he made the change.  PP was worse and the new license doesn't allow Rec Area at all, just the Store, but the septic abuse made for a valid excuse for what APCO had to do anyway.

2.  I don't begrudge anyone from visiting the lake, I'd just hate to be the home owner located right next door.to five trailers.

IT seems like you must be because you know so much that just isn't so. How many of the principals do you know? No one! That's what I thought. Yes they were out of compliance at PP, but had been for decades. And had been relicensed. DARE Park was created at the last relicensed  because FERC required more recreation. It had nothing to do with the fact it was trailers, which seems to be your main concern. I mean you saw wheels in those pics, OMG! The horror. Not trailers.

AS for Maxwell, I know personally the woman who was FIRED for allowing the place to become a permanent encampment.. She actually retired, but her nephew lost his job. It is still zoned recreational and if ma well decided, they could reopen as recreational, but full bird colonel s tend to get their way.. So go read the Internet some more and come back and tell us what is happening around the lake.. I prefer to talk to people that live around the lake to get my news.

IF you want to meet Carolyn just come by someday and I will take you a couple miles away, to OMG her double wide trailer, and introduce you and she can tell you. But hurry, she is very sick. But that OK, I will introduce you to her sister if you don't make it in time.

OWe your cr@p dude. You made a stupid, reactionary, knee Jeri statement that came across as very elitist because they were putting trailers in PARKER Creek, you even saw the wheels for God's sake. PP would have had the same result had those idiots built stick houses on somebody else's property with deficient septic. It had nothing to do with the fact they were trailers. I highly recommend you NEVER go anywhere near Bama Park, Herron fish Camp, or God forbid, Wind Creek because you will see so many of the great unwashed citizenry that you will probably stroke out!

And BTW, my families fist place was a small double wide on big water right across the mouth of Parker Creek.

Get over yourself.

When we bought a little over 20 years ago there was a small encampment where The Landing is now that included travel trailers.

I remember it well. Back in the day when shear pins were what saved props I went to the Marina without a care in the world but hit something, probably a log, but didn't think much of it it was such a light hit, so I thought. Boat continued to run fine. I pulled into a slip gassed up and started to leave. I put her in reverse and nothing happened. After several minutes I finally figured out the prop was gone. I was baffled. I called a friend who knew lots more than me and he explained as long as I was in forward torque kept the proper in place, but when it revel in reverse it threw the prop off.

THe point is there were a bunch of kids playing at the campground and a couple had mask and fins. They came over and went diving for my prop in abiut 15 feet of water. They found it. It was Sunday so the shop at the marina was closed but a couple of the campers had spare shear pins and one luckily fit my prop. Without the kindness of strangers I would have been stranded. But that was true many times. I still pay it forward to this day. I will not pass up a stranded boat, ever!

I'm 45 years old and I remember when I was little (6, 7, 8 years old) my dad pulling our Shasta Trailer to Parker Creek to go camping and we would go to Real Island also.  I personally think if Parker Creek is providing the trailers, there shouldn't be a problem like it would be just allowing people to bring their own trailer to camp.

I think the thing is how it is done, and how it is controlled.  According to Wix's post, these will be rental trailers, I am assuming short term leasing.  As long as the area is kept neat, and it meets sanitation requirements and Herb keeps it to family rentals, it will be okay.  He seems to have succeeded in making The Landing family friendly, so I doubt he is looking to turn it into a rowdy affair.  I think there are families who would love to rent a place on Lake Martin, and give their kids a great lake vacation.  I wasn't on Lake Martin as a child, but our grandkids love it, and my neighbors grandchildren love it.  And who doesn't love to see kids have a good time?  We took our grandchildren to The Landing last year and they loved the little beach and the Tarzan Boat.

They will be for week long rental or Thursday - Sunday rental.  Week gets two meals at Landing, T-S gets one meal at Landing.  Not sure of the price but these are cute little units.  First three are on site and will be right across water from herb's house, so I imagine he will run a tight ship.

Herb has made quite an investment of his time and money to make the Landing a great place to visit and enjoy. These units should be a great place for fishermen to stay while at tournaments instead of having to pack up and head to town just to return the next morning. I say hats off to Herb for going out on a limb investing in his business, after all if he succeeds we all win.

YOur are right. Those five units represent an investment North of 200k+ site and sewer work. I hope that he purchased them from the gentleman right here in Jackson's Gap that manufactures them and has been featured on HGTV's tiny house Nation show helping the local economy even further. Personally I think it is a shame that the only place on this huge lake that a family can vacation is Wind Creek or renting a house. We need more camping and RV sites so the general public has more options to be able to enjoy this treasure. There was a nice chunk of land swapped from preserve into recreation zoning with the new license and I hope it is developed. I would like a nice mixed use development split between RV and primitive camping. Some of my best memories are camping at Wind Creek as a child. I remember the year we upgraded from a tent to a pop-up camper. It is especially clear to me because I spent several day stuck inside it after an accident on the rope swimming g sent me to the Emergency Room at Russell Hospital for stitches in my lip and knee. Thinking back I am certain not once was suing or lawyers even mentioned. My how things have changed... Lol.

BOttoman line, Herb has invested greatly to create a wonderful destination for all to enjoy. To think folks like Wix see it as negative because, OMG they have wheels, is so petty and speaks volumes about him and his type. Maybe he will be so offended he will sell and move to Lanier.

It was many years ago indeed.  We were one of them. In fact the very first that leased a lot from Ed Armagost.  We spent the first two seasons in the early 70s as the only ones there. Over time, quite a few joined.  More than 8-10.  We left in the early 80s.

They are cute.  And that is a signifigant investment, so I don't think he will put up with people trashing the place.  I don't get the tiny house craze, but with so few options for lodging on the lake, this should be popular.

Wix, No offense but you are still incorrect about the reason Pleasure Point was shut down. Lifer et al are correct.

The State Board of Health  / County Board of Health came in and told the lady running that park that she had to clean up. She didn't. Then the Board came to Alabama Power and said, essentially, "your lessee won't clean up so you have to since you own the land." AP said to the lady "you have to clean up this septic mess or we aren't renewing your lease." She didn't do anything so they didn't renew her lease and spent well in to the six figures to clean up the septic that was leaking into the lake. So maybe you might call that "using a septic excuse" but I call it giving your lessee every chance to fix the problem before you go in there and spend tons of cash to fix a waste problem you didn't create.
