Subject:	college 529 programs

Does anyone here know about these or have any experience.  I am thinking we should start one for our baby grand-daughter.  I started doing a little research on them and saw that there were many, many options.  I have no experience with them.  It just seems like it might be a better thing to contribute to something like this for her, than buying her even more toys and outfits that she doesn't need.  And she may want to go to college one day.  Anyone have any advice?

  Stay away from anything the government has anything to do with. Someone recently posted how they got screwed on the Alabama program while it was administered by our new current governor. Search "RSA" to find the thread.

  But I am more interested in how you have a grandchild. Your husband posted several times that you have no children which really precludes one having grandchildren. Of course most of us learned that if we had known how great the grandchildren are we would have had them first... Lol. I guess you guys are just living the dream.

we have 5 kids, without them, after tax and all, we would have had to find a way to save for college.  One has finished, the 529 benefit that I like best is you can roll money downhill to other children.  Others can deposit money in too, we had substantial gifts put in long time ago that greatly helped.  I would recommend it, but like anything, how they are managed for returns matters.

Great gift for a grandchild and by extension the parents.  You can use any 529 plan from any state.  Does not have to be in the state they live.  Look around as some are better  than others.
