If you have better soil that I have you might can grow some. Centepeed seems to work well. Zoysia is great but costly. Haven't had too much luck with bermuda.

We have Emerald zoysia.  It's been 9 years and it's fine.

Centipede: requires less frequent mowing. Needs approximately  1" water per week- does not require fertilizer but if you do fertilize  do it once in late May with 15-0-15.

I personally don’t like Zoysia, but have a small patch trying to take over centipede lakeside. I had a problem with my centipede on other side of house and sprigged it with St. Augustine from my house in Bham. I took over the centipede area completely in 3 years and looks better.

 My vote is for St. Augustine.

After having problems with centipede and others, we went to emerald zoysia at home and the lakehome.  Both yards are gorgeous and I would not have anything else.  It is more expensive, but worth it to us.  We have compliments all the time on both yards.

Drive around and find a yard that has alot of sun and nice looking grass. Knock on the door and tell them how nice their yard looks and ask them what kind of grass. Beats trying to decide on your own.

When the trees mature and the grass can't get sun- it's over- You then grow moss or ivy

We have had the emerald zoysia at the lake for 22 years with great results.  Some of it gets sun and a good bit gets shade.  Our home has had it for a couple of years, with more sun than shade. Great results.  Both are amazing.

We have St. Augustine at the lake and Centipede in the backyard at the house.  Both are "weed grasses", so you have to be VERY careful if you apply a broadleaf weed killer...  In Montgomery, we had Bermuda and liked it, went with Celebration Bermuda for the front at the house last year and really like it.  It is supposed to be shade tolerant, and seems to do well on the North side of a privacy fence.
