Subject:   Beach etiquette....what happened to it?

We were at a single boat beach today. We had children swimming everywhere, cooking hotdogs, and just having some great "family time".

then out of nowhere comes this pontoon boat with an extremely angry man onboard. Who begins to tell us we do not own the beach and he has been on the lake for 20 something years. Oh. By the way he is applying his decals as he is telling us this....what? That to us meant he just got on the lake today!!! So....where is the beach etiquette? The respect for people's privacy?

The beach with one boat has 10 feet on each side. This to us is a single boat beach. We would never infringe on a family having fun together.

Are we wrong? Has this happened to anyone else? Please help us understand. We have lived on the lake for 24 years. 15 years as permanent residents.

My view has always been that it is first come, first served when it comes to these sandy areas.  Sounds like this guy was just venting because he was late to the game.  As for his stickers, they expire at different months so that may not be indicative of anything about his longevity at the lake.  He just sounds like a jerk and it's best to ignore them.  You did nothing wrong.

Thank you for your reply. His stickers were October...you are right. Just a jerk!

it is sad that the lake is loosing its "small town" attitude towards each other.

I find people can act like jerks no matter how "long they've been here."

He was probably just bragging the whole way over to his friends about this perfect beach that no one else knows about.

We took the grandkids to pirate island today. There was a boater there before us he helped tie ours up gave toys to our kids then helped another boater when we were leaving. Great experience just like it should be.

The sad truth is that some of the long timers think they own the lake and the places on it.  All you can do is shrug them off.  Some of the newer people don't seem to care about the unspoken rules of etiquette and seem to be oblivious to everything but what they want to do.  The thing is the guy with the pontoon can come back another day when you aren't using that beach.  We are full timers and during the week, there isn't much boat traffic at all, so we leave others to have their fun on the weekends.  Courtesy seems in short supply these days and unfortunately, that has trickled down to the lake.

Coupla thoughts....I think the whole world is getting this way...not just at the lake. Because of what the lake offers, it is the last to get soured wth the bitterness and anxiety permiating the world. That and $.99 will get you a cup of coffee.

On a more important note. We have been lake martin lovers since the late 60's...I am 2nd generation...so I know this lake better than the back of my hand but have never been able to pinpoint islands by the name given to them. I hear people discussing going to this island or that island and I have no idea which one they are speaking of. Is there a map of this....or a "island class" I can take to become more edumacated on the whereabouts of these fondly named islands?

ChrisCraft, if I'm not mistaken (and there's a better than average chance I am), there's a link on this website with a map of the lake with the named islands on it.  I don't know them either and have been around this lake since the sixties also.

also on the islands- I plugged some (not all) of the more popular islands into my free Lake Martin Voice app. Here is a link to where you can download it on Apple or Google:

http://lakemartinvoice.com/app/

You click to the "Fun" button and then click "Landmarks" - you'll have a list there.

If you agree to share your location, you'll see your own location as a blue blip on the screen's map.

My goal was to help folks that are in front of an island and wonder, "which one is that?" Also to help those that want to be able to navigate, to say, Sand Island. They can see where they are on the lake, and also where the island is.

I've attached a screen shot to show what it looks like on your phone.

That being said, I have learned that coding by lat and long is really buggy. So if any of you see that one of my island markers is off, please message me through this site or email me at - john (at) lakemartinvoice (dot) com

Thanks!
