Glad to see a snowflake enjoys a little clean humor and recognition of the blackbird as the fastest air breathing machine of its era.

By the way, there is an SR-71 on static display at the Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum close to Dulles Airport outside Washington, DC.  If you are ever in the area it is well worth the trek out there.  The SR-71 has some really cool company, to include the Space Shuttle Discovery and the Enola Gay, among many other notable Air and space vehicles and memorabilia.

Now that was cool and pretty dang funny.  With GPS these days no one asks for their ground speed anymore.  Thanks for sharing.

Hodja, not sure if you've ever been but the museum at Wright Pat in Dayton is one of the best aircraft museums I've been to and much better than the Smithsoneon.

In the interest of full disclosure I haven't been to the one at Wright-Pattern, but have you been to the one by Dulles?  I agree the one downtown on the Mall is nothing but tourists shoulder to shoulder and I never go there nor do I take any guests or family there.  The Udvar-Hazy location is magnificent - SST, prototype Boeing 707, F-35 (with its drive train separated so you can see how the one engine drives the forward and rear fans), even the gondola Felix Baumgartner jumped out of at 100K+ feet to break the sound barrier in free fall. Well worth the ten or fifteen dollars it costs to park, entry is free.

I've been to the Smithsonian and the one by Dulles.  The one at Wright Pat is awesome.  I agree with Hodja about the Smithsonian - it's on all the lists of the tourists and it gets so crowded.  But that do have that cool theatre when you can experince flying.  Or they used to anyway.

There is an A-21 on display at the Birminghan Aviation Museum. This is the original single seat interseptor version of what became the SR-71. It was designed to intersept the MIG-21. There is another one at the space museum in Huntsville.

There is a great book on this called the Skunk Works by Ben Rich.
