We are having a problem with our motor home's generator.  Will not keep running.  Will run if we put gas directly to carb, but then dies.  Any recommendations or do you know anyone who works on them.  It is an On an.  Thanks.

Its a fuel supply problem obviously. If it's an older model ethanol fuel has probably separated the inner and outer layers of the hose. Try replacing it and the filter. If that doesn't correct it then look to the tank itself. Could be rust or gunk clogging the pickup. Hope this helps.

Motor home is 3 years old, if I fill the float bowl it will run until it emptis it. The primer pump runs but blows mostly air. Ifound a in-line filtr but I can not get to it without pulling the gen out of the frame. I will call onan tomorrow. Thanks JT Taylor

I'm not sure what type carbuerator you have, but if the float bowl has a screw in the bottom that you remove tp take off the bowl, if you haven't done so, you need to look at the screw, and if it is the type that has a "small" hole in the end and another hole in the side where the threads are, that might be your problem. Both holes have to be open for the engine to run. Insert a small wire or "pin" into each hole to make sure the holes are not clogged up. The holes are actually open to each other and they must be "open". I assume that since you have already had the bowl off that you checked these two holes. If not, I have found this to be the problem on many occasions. In fact, I have a small portable generator that I repaired yesterday and that was the problem. Hope this helps!

Almost impossible to get to the bottom without removing the carb without pulling the generator out of the motor home. . Carb runs out of fuel because the supply line runs out of fuel.  Going to try calling On an and talk with a tech.  Thanks for your advice.

If you disconnect the gas line from the carbuerator are you saying that no gas runs out? As indicated in an earlier post, it appears that either the fuel filter is clogged or the gas tank is clogged where it connects to the  gas line. Out of curosity I would be interested in the final fix. Good luck!

Sounds like the main fuel jet is stopped up.  The Gen-set should pull out on a rack.  We can fix it for you.

The Onan is in a motor home - not so easy to get out.  After seeing a video on Youtube, we have ordered a fuel pump and fuel filter.  Hopefully will do the tric, otherwise may get in touch with you.  Thanks.

Have ordered a fuel pump and fuel filter - will let you know the outcome.  Thanks.

This might be too simple.  A motor home generator will not get gas if your fuel tank is one quarter full or below.

Interesting information. Do you know if this is true for generators installed on all motorhomes, or does it just apply to the way certain manufacturers install their generators?

I have owned four motor homes (three by Allegro) and it was the case on all of them.  It is designed to not to let the generator run you out of gas and leave you stranded.

one too many "to"s. It is designed to not let the generator run you out of gas and leave you stranded.

That is interesting, but is there an override? I ask because I fail to see the difference in running empty and not picking up the last quarter of a tank. I would be more upset if it stopped working with fuel in the tank than if I was dumb enough to run it out of fuel without backup. I am not doubting you in the least, I just fail to see the rationale.

I have been told, a few times, that the gas line for the generator does not fo to the bottom of the tank like the gas line to the engine does.  I'm not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV.

Understand, but the gas tank is full.

After three days of working, including installing a new pump and filter, the service manager of our motor home, Coach House, said may be driving around might dislodge whatever has caused the blockage, on our second day out, we tried the generator and would you believe, it started after three tries and ran for more than a moment!!!.  Have not put any pressure on it yet, but seems good.  By the way, we tried everyone's suggestions and we really appreciate you taking time helping.  And we have run 1.5 tanks full, so maybe that helped too.

If you ever need help on changing a pump, go on YouTube.  They are great.  Think we are back in business.

If I read your post correctly you don't know which of the things you did actually corrected the problem. Regardless, I  am glad you were able to get it running.
