APT is running an excellent documentary on the Viet Nam war.  I'm learning a lot about the things that led us to getting involved, the prevailing attitude in Viet Nam before we did.  Like All Ken Burns documentaries, it is really excellent.  It's on every night at 7 for the next 10 days.  One of the things that came out tonight is what a poor President Kennedy was.

I can never watch a series like this when it first comes out because of my schedule but plan to binge watch it when it is available in another format.

As for Kennedy, I have long believed had he not been assasinated his reputation as a President would be mediocrity at best.  Bay of Pigs was but one example but escalating the war in Vietnam was his low point.  And Johnson made it even worse.  It's interesting that Nixon is so pilloried over Vietnam despite having it being handed to him and his ultimate decision to withdraw.  Will be interesting to see how Burns handles that part of the story.

He touched on it last night about the segregation issues in this country during the Kennedy years. 

I was just fascinated to learn history of how we got there to start with.  Goes back to Truman and Eisenhower, and how our obsession with Communism and the Cold War led us in that direction.  I can remember when I was in grammar school being taught about the Domino Theory.  I have to confess it leads me wondering about our obsesion with ISIS and where that has led us. 

As an aside, while I was in the Pentagon, I was doing some research and happened upon the report of the Mei Li incident.  I checked it out and started reading, becuase I remember when it happened.  Fascinating stuff. 

One thing that I found interesting in the broad cast last night was how the military leaned on the press to not report the whole truth about what was going on when it wasn't favorable to our efforts there.

Love some of their shows, but with the realization of their agendas.  Translation, be wary of the contents truth.

I've found Ken Burns documentaries to be pretty straightforward without an agenda.  And don't forget that Viet Nam was a Democrats War.  the major players were all Democrats. 

In fact, I am finding it amazing how much difference between todays Democratic party and the Democratic party then.

Ken Burns is one of the best.  I happen to agree 100 % with Talullahhound ( what a name :) )   I have not missed one espisode yet and it tells what really went on.  For those who are not old enough and never served in Viet Nam I recommend you to see this.  You have the right to turn the channel if you don't agree with what is being shown.  You can always watch Rachel Maddow :) if you don't like this.  Cobra
