Over the last few years I have noticed many people carrying small dogs on a plane in those little carry on bags.  Occasional barks but no real issue.  Also have occasionally seen service dogs being trained to fly.  Again, no issue.  Last week I flew to San Antonio and back and there were two full size dogs that were definitely not service dogs on the flights.  One, a German Shephard kept going into the isle while the flight attendants were trying to serve drinks.  I sat there expecting someone to trip over the dog and get hurt.  At one point the dog had his head in the isle and the flight attendant was carrying a tray of drinks and didn't see him and gave him a kick in the face.  The owner got all pissy about it and I am thinking would she feel the same way if some passenger kept their feet in the isle.  It's not like they don't announce to keep the isles clear while they are doing their service.  

I just don't get it.  If you want to take a full size dog on an airline flight you need to have some consideration for the other travelers and the crew.  Maybe drive if you can't leave home without your pet.

I know several people that take their coonhounds on the plane.  They claim that they will lay at their feet, and not make a sound.   One commented the other day that her seatmate seemed upset about having a dog in his area.  I think half of the people that claim their dogs are service animals are frauds.  People can buy those vests on the internet.  

My Walker or my LabMix might be okay to travel with, but my Blue Tick has a big mouth and if anyone was eating something, he'd be barking like mad.  He has a very loud bark.  I have enough problem with screaming kids on planes, much less having to deal with a big mouth Blue Tick.  I think the key thought here is "consideration for others" -which is so rare in a culture where everyone seems to think "Me first".

You have to pay a fee for the last dog I carried Shitzu in soft crate under seat Daughters dog)). This was about 2 years ago on United from Spokane to Bham for about $200.

You have to register in advance as they limit # of dogs in cabin.

But you had it in a crate vs just on a leash.  I can see this as I would not want my animal down in the hold where they killed the giant bunny not too long ago.

But then again my dog is a handfull and no way in hell I would take her on a plane period crated, leashed on in the hold.  100 lbs of malamute is fun, she was a rescue about to get put down when she was 2 because owner didnt know what to do with her and was moving to a non-dog friendly home.

When  I did this you had to agree to dog of certain size or smaller crate was size to fit under seat and animal had to stay in crate. I have seen people pull dogs out of crates but only larger dogs I have ever seen were service dogs properly documented and marked usually with a cape or harness. I flew weekly domestic and/or international for 35 years up until about 7 years ago when I retired. Now only travel a few times a year and only if someone holds a gun on me.

A man after my own heart (about the flying).  

I was rather surprised when some of my hound friends said that they took their dogs on the plane.  I could see it if it was a very well trained dog and would lay at my feet, but none of my dogs would do that.  They like people and would want to socialize and check out the kitchen to see if there was anything to eat.
