Arm them....that really works...armed Resource officer

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The only armed sheriff’s deputy at a Florida high school where 17 people were killed took cover outside rather than charging into the building when the massacre began, the Broward County sheriff said on Thursday.

And you think teachers are going out into the hallways to hunt down some kid with an AR15? Would you go hunting a killer? I agree it would have a chance of working if the killer came into the classroom.

Actually, no one knows how they will react when they are in that situation. He was likely afraid.  The man was a 30 veteran of the force, so likely older, which was probably why he was on that duty.

Don't pollute the thought because one man failed to act.

I don't think that is fair.  Obama had a number of cringeworthy days.  If you go back in history and look at some of the presidents, they weren't all smooth talking lizards.  LBJ, Nixon, T. Roosevelt, GW Bush.  I actually like that Trump says what is on his mind.

"no one knows how they will react when they are in that situation. He was likely afraid." That is why arming teachers is such a bad idea. Maybe, metal detecters and a gate at the entrance would help keep out gun carrying killers.

I don't think that arming teachers should be the first thing that is tried, but I have my doubts about how effective metal detectors and gates would be.  As it is, some schools are locked, but the shooter will just shoot their way in.  I think there is something to reinforcing and having different stardard for buildings that are schools.  But at the end of the day, a determined killer will do what they have to do.  Just look at what terrorists achieve with cars in Europe.  and who can forget that the Morrow Building was attacked with nothing more than a rented truck and a homemade bomb.

If you have metal detectors they are useless unless there is an armed guard to moniter those passing thru. There are many legal items that set off detectors. Only an armed guard can evaluate items. Armed responce is the only thing that has stopped one of these shootings. In fact they all have stopped as soon as the perp received return fire!

If the threat of armed response doesn't work then why doesn't someone shoot up a gun show?

That officer in my opinion as well as others, was a coward.  Trained at taxpayer expense and afraid to confront a crazed teenager.  He at least should have entered and distracted the shooter away from other students, drawn fire, thereby saving lives much like the football coach did with no weapon, much like the JRROTC teen tried to do, until reinforcements arrived.  He did not have to mortally wound him, even though his weapon gave him every opportunity to do so with an accurate shot.

We dont know the whole story yet. Was the deputy confused about what his response should be? The way he responded used to be standard procedure in a potential hostage situation. When was the last time the broward sheriff conducted active shooter training, and did sheriff ensure this deputy attended? Why was this deputy assigned by sheriff to the rather low prestige asdignment of resource ofgicer at a school? Capable deputies tend to be assigned to street duty. Did this deputy have a history of sub par performance which relegated him to school duty, and if so why did sheriff keep him on the force? This career deputys performance makes me think the broward shdriff department needs some close examination by an outside agency.

Pretty safe to assume that they don't assign their best and brightest to school duty although that may be rethought now.

Probably in many districts it is punishment.

News said the deputy “retired” as soon as he was suspended.  He was probably just a hanger oner waiting to retire so he was assigned to “safe duty”.

I heard that Uncle Joe Biden was the one responsible for the gun-free schools law in 1990.

Looks like the Right supported it... 313-1 in the House. Last time I checked, Bush was a Republican.

  • Introduced in the Senate as S.3266 by Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D-DEon October 27, 1990
  • Passed the Senate on October 27, 1990 (passed voice vote)
  • Passed the House of Representatives on October 27, 1990 (313-1, Roll call vote 534, via Clerk.House.gov)
  • Signed into law by President George H.W. Bush onNovember 29, 1990

I guess the shooter was not aware of this law or the law that makes murder illegal.  However, the Coward County deputies certainly observed the gun free zone ruling by not going in and hiding behind mama's skirt.  It's a good thing the shooter had been expelled, otherwise they probably would not have arrested him.

You need to send the chart to the parents who lost kids to the AR15 killer. I am sure it will make them feel alot better.

There was an unbelievable amount of information that has surfaced(after the fact) on the background and intentions of Cruz, that even a minimal investigation, in my opinion, might have prevented this terrible shooting. Much was known about the shooter's mental history, but rather than doing an in depth evaluation, he was passed back and forth between many different agencies, and remained free to carry out his "warnings". I think it is likey that the way his case was handled probably added to his frustration and may have given impetus to his actions. Trying to use this shooting to justify banning guns is just a continuation of liberals desire to take away rights given under the Constitution. The amount of information available on Cruz is so mind-boggling I may try to summarize some of the more salient points in a later post.

Why can't I buy a machine gun under the 2nd Amendment? It is just a gun which you feel is guaranteed under the 2nd Amedment. Isn't it a violation of my 2nd Amendment?

The framers recognized that the rights expressed were given by God, they are codified into law through the constituents. Brilliant men those framers were.

Actually you can purchase one, Link  it is expensive and must be manufactured and registered with BATFE prior to 1986.

Here is you a link to the 12 page BATFE form if you wish to start the process to purchase one.

Buteye, I agree with you.  And what you say about the Florida school shooter is the same for the other school and theatre shooters.  Signs all over that people saw, but couldn't seem to do anything about.  Even the shooter at Ft. Hood was putting out signs, but no one had the courage to address or report what they were seeing.

In Florida, it seems a bit worse, because the authoirities were notified, but they did not take any action.  I find it interesting that people are more interested in looking at what they think a gun ban would accomplish, vice looking at the mental health.  They have identified other kids now that were in the advanced stages of planning their own school shooting.  People are too quick to say "look at England and look at Australia" who ban gun ownership, while forgetting that they do not have the same society as wel do.  And it certainly hasn't stopped an terrorist attacks.  The anti-gun advocates demand that as a minimum the AR-15 be banned, and I find that funny that they are demanding their rights, and in doing so, don't mind stomping over everyone else's rights.

So answer a question:  Have you seen the transcript of the woman's warning phone call to the FBI in January?  Seems to me the real culprit here is a non-responsive FBI who took no action when warned that Cruz was killing animals, had multiple guns and was buying more, and the woman was convinced he was going to do something really bad.  The FBI and the cowardly sheriff's department are the ones to blame, not an inanimate object.  And don't fool yourself, if he didn't have access to an AR he would use a pipe bomb, knife, car, or anything else he could find to carry out his evil act.

So are you aware of that conversation between the woman caller and the FBI?  Do something different and answer the question.

Great chart, hadji.

Democrats have crippled law enforcement over tha last 50 years with burdensome regulations that keep mentally unbalanced walking on the streets. Its becoming apparent that cruz was a product of one of those regulations imposed by obama. The broward shdriff covered up the transgressions by cruz so that minority arrest statistics would be lower, like obama demanded under thrdat of funding cuts.
