Just talked to my brother-in-law who lives on Lake Norman outside of Charlotte.  The spread of hydrilla weeds in their lake is out of control.  Duke Power announced they will be releasing 10,000 farm raised (and sterile) "Grass Carp" who will eat their weight in the weed each day.  They say it will take a month to six weeks for the carp to clean up the hydrilla. The carp can also get to a maximum of 40 lbs, but die off.  This happened about 15 years ago there and the process worked very well.  He said the hydrilla is brought in by man on boat props that have been in other lakes and also bait from other lakes.

I have seen ponds before and after. The change is quite dramatic. "They are worth their weight in weeds."

Since they can't have sex and can't smoke weed...their only pleasure is to eat grass and more grass and more grass.

If they had them smoke weed they would get the munchies and eat twice their weight.  At least that's what I've heard. ??

They did this at Caney Lake in La. Destroyed the Bass habitat. They dont just die off either.

If they are an invasive Species APCO will come spray them. If native to the area they usually won't do anything unless they become a real nuisance.

Lake Tallassee has an invasive weed problem a few years ago, and APCo dropped the elevation about ten feet one winter to kill it off.  Keeping weeds like hydrilla and milfoil out of the lake is probably the best thing about a lower winter pool.  If we ever do get an infestation, I would be all for a one year much lower than the rule winter pool to kill it off.

If lowering level kills off the weeds that would be a great idea. Once every 3 or 5 years take it down 12 feet. Kill weeds and give owners an opportunity to work on docks. But getting it to happen wont be soon. Took decades to change drawdown from 10 to 7.

This resurgence of hydrilla could ve an unforeseen consequence  of only lowering the lake 7 feet in winter.
