on my way to Bham Tuesday, noticed a new shopping center on 280 in Sylacauga--signs alrerady up = Hobby Lobby, T J MAXX, Pet Sense--last time i looked 280 came thru Alex City & AC's population was about 2500 more than Sylacauga--hmmm--must have something to do with a Chamber of Commerce actually working to grow their community--oh & by the way, will the WINN DIXIE be a victim of the 200+ closings due to bankrupcy ? im sure AC is working on some more fast food places though

I heard about this.  According to Alex City Outlook article about a month ago, they paid to have a study done and a lot of businesses would be interested in Alex City, but they can't find franchizees.  There is supposed to be a shopping center coming to that property next to Walmart, but they haven't even broke ground yet.  I don't think Alex City is aggressive enough in recruiting new businesses.  There are a lot of people that don't want to lose that "blue collar" image.  I had hoped that with all the Korean businesses that have opened in some of the Russell, we might get a decent Korean restaurant, but so far, it hasn't happened.  They are trying to build the downtown area with locally owned businesses, but we could really use some big businesses out on 280, that have nothing to do with Fast Food.  If Winn Dixie closes, it's going to be really tough for those of us who don't wish to shop at Walmart.

Just saw the death penalty list of closing Winn Dixie stores. Alex City is safe for now.
