I am in need of some good non-fiction book recommendations.  So here is my list of top five favorite non-fiction books:

The Last Lion by William Manchester (about Churchill)

The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright (about the beginning of al Queda)

1776 by David McCullough (about the Revolutionary War)

Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer (about Everest)

Here are my runners up

The River of Doubt by Candice Millard

Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose

Unbroken and Sea Biscuit by Laura Hillenbrand

Lincoln - Team of Rivals by Doris Kerns Goodwin

The road to Serfdom by Friedrich van Hayek

With the Old Breed by E.B. Sledge

What say you about your favorites?

One I read recently was "Tell my Sons: A Father's Last Letters" by LTC Mark Weber.  He was diagnosed with terminal cancer when he was 39 years old and had just been hand selected by Petreus to go to Iraq for an important mission.  These are letters he wrote to his sons, about his career and lessons he learned in life.

Weber died in 2013.  Surprisingly, it is not at all depressing.

Bought.  Only $1.99 for Kindle version.  The reviews were terrific.  Have you read any on my list?

   Two of my favorite are:

   1)  Azorian by Polmat and White It is about the raising of that K-129 Russian sub from 15000 feet of water. A fantastic product of American engineering.

  2) Mig Pilot by John Barron. This is the story of Steven Bilinco(?) who defected in a Mig-25 to Japan over 30 years ago. His view of Communism and his eye opening experience in coming to America. It whould be manditory reading in all our high schools! An old book but worth the search.

You can check synopsis and reviews, but I really enjoyed these books.

The Boys in the Boat - Brown

The Worst Hard Time - Egan

Thunderstruck - Larson

The Perfect Horse - Letts

The Day the World Came to Town - DeFede

The Eighty-Dollar Champion - Letts

Dead Wake - Larson

I have read 5 of your choices and appreciate the other recommendations.

I'll check them out as I have been in a drought lately.  Appreciate the suggestions!  By the way, have you read The Looming Tower?  Fascinating book.

Thanks!  I'll check them out.  I find the older I get the more I enjoy non fiction.

Odd you should mention The Looming Tower. A buddy mentioned it to me a few days ago and I put it on my 'to read' list already. Thanks for seconding his recommendation. None of the books I recommended to you are new. Since I like to own the 'real' paper books while I read them, I wait until they are reasonable at used-book prices. Also, like you, as I age, I am appreciating non-fiction more than I did.

If you have never read it "We were Soldiers Once and Young" by Hal Moore and Joe Galloway is an excellent read.  Hal Moore was a real hero for his service in Viet Nam.  (Even the movie is good and one of my favorites).

I see he wrote a follow on book "We are Soldiers Still".  I haven't read it but it is now on my read list.

Already part way through Letter to my Sons.  Great read that I plan to give to my son.  Even though it didn't make my top five I would suggest you get River of Doubt first.  It is a great read about a fascinating guy on an amazing adventure with his son.

The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright (about the beginning of al Queda) a good one.
