Lookig for suggestions for eliminating a copperhead who has taken up residence under our jet ski on the float.  I can't shoot it because of where it is.  And when he comes out he goes right under water so I can't get to it when I chase him off.   Is there a service in the lake area that can capture and kill it or something I can do to get it to move on from this spot?

Obama had a program that captured snakes but in February Trump signed an Executive Order which eliminated the program. Read the thread and call S&S and see if they are able to help.......

Yet another useless govt program eliminated by Trump.  You made my day.  I use S&S for termite and pest control and will give them a call.  I prefer the private sector to take care of my snake problem.  The govt would probably designate my jet ski float as a snake sanctuary and not allow me to move it anymore.

ill be happy to list your house--but wait--since you disclosed the issue, i would be legally bound to do the same to any prospective buyer

You can shoot anything once. A .410 with bird shot works well or even shot shells in a revolver.

Find a rat snake!  Make friends with it and show it where the Copperhead lives.  They love eating tasty Copperheads!!!

Actually, a lot of activity around that float will usually make them move on.  Go out there frequently with a long stick or broom handle and pester it.  Maybe a hose with a nozzle on the end spraying it.  Anything to let it know it is not welcome.  Moving into summer, it will mostly be nockturnal.

.... or the rat-shot idea.

The location you describe doesn't fit a Copperhead. If the jet ski was off the float for a few days the hidding place would be gone and so would he.

Yeah but my problem is it is sitting under the jet ski on the float and when it comes out it ducks under the water so there's no opportunity to shoot it without potentially damaging the jet ski or the float.

Duh!  I actually have a second unused float that isn't under the boat house that I could use until he moves on.  That's what I'll do and hopefully he won't find it.  Thanks for the suggestion and making the light shine on my marble head.  And it's definitely a copperhead as I've seen it several times.

I'll bet it's not a Copperhead.  They are not water snakes.  Under the steps going into your house is more likely where you'll find them.  I feel very confident that it would be safe to grab him and pry open his mouth and check for fangs.

I'm surprised that he would take up residence by the water, because I didn't know they went into the water.  Now if you said a cottom mouth, that would make sense.  There seems to be an awful lot of snakes around.  I've seen at least 5-6 dead on the road recently.  And someone working on my house found a rat snake.  We just relocated him.

Well it was light brown and had the markings of a copperhead.  Definitely not a water mocassin.  Maybe there's another snake that looks like a copperhead.  Either way I'm hoping moving the jet ski will send him packing and I won't have to find out.

Simple solution Martini.... MOVE!

Once I saw the dadgum cottommouth water rattler in the same spot twice I figure he has moved in so it's time fore to get out.

Hah!  Sorry but I like my place and if one of us moves, it'll be the snake.

I can almost 100% guarantee that it's NOT a Copperhead. It's a Midland Water Snake. (It's a common mistake, but a side-by-side comparison will show the obvious differences in pattern.)

I used to do Snake Removal professionally, and can still be talked into relatively easy jobs that don't involve me driving long distances or crawling under houses.

I would have a serious heart attack if I found one of those.  Even the "juvenile" looks huge.

Snakes have been bad this year. I ran over 2 driving home from work yesterday.

We have a rule that if the snake can be identified as harmless, we let it be as long as it didn’t scare anybody. Had a rat snake that scared our granddaughter last Saturday. When my son and I identified it he asked if we wanted to just relocate it. I told him it scared his daughter and he said “he gone”. I will add it was a rather healthy gentleman but you don’t scare a 4 year old and live to see another day around here.

Good luck relocating yours.

That's what it looks like and I am much relieved.  We had a copperhead under our shed by the water and our neighbor killed it.  But since this is a non-venomous snake I will just leave it alone unless I get too many complaints from my wife.  Sure looked like a copperhead but I only had a few seconds to watch it before it slipped into the water.

It might be better to teach someone in that situation exactly WHY they shouldn't be scared. Killing something because it scared someone is just reinforcing their (incorrect in this case) opinion that it was indeed scary.

My mom had the idea "Y'all might not like snakes but you're going to be able to tell the good from the bad," so she made all of the kids at the lake handle a small water snake. That went a long way towards turning out a generation of kids who did not have that over-whelming fear of snakes, and who could look at one objectively and know whether or not to be worried. (None of the other kids wound up liking them as much as I did, but they all had the healthy appreciation and understanding that is lacking all too often.)

The H&R handi gun is the best all-around critter gitter. Needs a tax stamp.
