I was sitting on the end of my pier last Saturday night at 10:00 pm and a couple of game wardens drove up to check my fishing license and any fish I had caught. My license is current ; so no ticket. Been fishing off that pier for over 50 years and this is a first.  Just wondering if anyone else has had the same experience lately.

I have been told you don't have to have a license to fish off your own pier?? Is this not true??

To not have to have a license to fish here are the two things that are listed.

Alabama Residents can fish from the bank in their county of residence with hook and line (live bait only) without purchasing a license.

A fishing license is required for every resident aged 16-64 if they want to fish in Alabama legally. Residents age 65 and above do not need to purchase a license.

Residents 65 and older must have an Alabama’s driver’s license or proof of permanent residence and age to fish. This does not include non-resident landowners.

So the question is, is a pier or dock considered the bank and were you fishing with live bait,

or

are you 65 or older.

I am under 65.  I am pretty sure a license is required when fishing from a private pier into public waters so they would have every right to dock at my pier.  I just have never had that happen and thought it was a little strange that they would stop at a pier to check one person fishing quietly at 10:00 pm.

Thinking as a game warden, if someone wants to fish without a license they are probably going to do it at night when the game wardens are sleeping............ Nice to see them out at night.

Google Alabama Outdoor News Hall of Shame and read about the life of a game warden

As I was puzzled by this I attempted to Google your suggestion...had no luck. Would love to understand the purpose of this law...other than to pad the coffers of the DNR.

It's Trumps fault.  With the exploding economy, DNR has hired new ones and they need to stay busy.

They were working the Parker Creek area on Mother's Day weekend back in May... pulled right up to the pier, asked for fishing license, if you didn't have it on you they'd look it up, if it wasn't valid it was a $100 ticket... never in my years of coming to the lake have I ever seen that type of activity... I don't think I've ever seen a game warden on the lake other that by road eating at the Landing.
