Sometime after the storm yesterday an upside down boat appeared by my dock.  Definitely in distress since it is mostly sunk but floating. There is not engine on the boat.

No idea where it came from but it will soon float off back into the lake and be a hazard to navigation.  I will contact Alabama Power this am but will appreciate suggestions.

Tie it off so it won’t float off.

Also call the marine police.  They will appreciate the call.

Tie it off? Then what am I going to do with it?  I spoke to the Marine Police and they said they can not do anything because it is on the east side of the hwy 49 bridge. I asked them about towing it (if I can) to the deep part of the creek and blowing holes in it with a shotgun and sinking it.  They said nothing illegal about that and it would make a good fish habitat. I can only imagine how many phone calls they and the sheriffs department would get if I do it.  For now it has moved away from my boat house to my neighbors.

Call the power company. The Shoreline management office in Dadeville would probably be best. Their number is 256-825-0053. I know at one time Alabama Power had a contract with towboat US to remove abandoned boats from the lake. The towboat US number is 256-307-1313.

Thanks for the info. I talked to them first and they said to call the Marine Police. The boat is still navugating upside down between my boathouse and my neighbors.  I am supposed to have someone come by this afternoon to take a look at it.  If he doesn't want it I will haul it out to the middle of the lake and sink it with my shotgun.

I'm sure the marine police have to declare it a hazard or some such before contacting tow boat to remove it.

Instead of worrying about what YOU are going to do, think about what the boat is NOT going to do: it's not going to float out somewhere and create a hazard for an unwary boater. And while it's tied up all safe and sond, you can still do the things you have been advised to do: call the marine police, and call APC. You might even check to see if it still has the registration number on the bow, which could be used to find the owner.

I'm actually a little surprised that your initial reaction was along the lines of "This THING is in MY way!! I'm inconvenienced! Is it OK with everybody if I just destroy it instead of trying to find the rightful owner? Or should I let it become a hazard?"

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. Times on the lake have changed, and so have the people.

If I could give you a thumb's up, ChrisCraft, I would. Let me guess: like me, you have been on the lake for a long, long time, right?
