I have a guest that will be staying with us in August and asked if there was a service to hire someone to pull a tube.  They plan on renting a boat so they could use their boat or whoever they hire.  Thought it was an excellent question, but I'd never heard of such a service.

OK, that's actually a very strange question.  Pulling a tube requires almost no brain power and if they can qualify to rent a boat they can pull a tube (although maybe marinas don't allow that with rented boats....dunno).

To be legal the driver must have a boating license so maybe that's the angle the original question is coming from??

LakeSide Marina offers rental pontoons (2017&2018 Bennington's) and does allow tubes to be pulled. They also offer capatain services is desired.

In Alabama you only need a boaters license if you operate a boat for more than 45 days in a year.  So that may be the angle but it surely wouldn't apply to a weekender.  Even if you spend every weekend at the lake in the summer you won't get to 45 days (that would be 22.5 weeks or almost half the year assuming you are there every single weekend and operate the boat both days).  And for out of staters it is a pain to get the actual license (at least in Tallapoosa county).  Much easier for residents as it can be an endorsement on their drivers license.  I had this debate with the marine police when they asked me for my boaters license.  I told them I wasn't required to have one as I operated a boat less than 45 days per year.  He said that was debatable and I very politely told him I have taken and passed the Alabama boaters course and it is very clear in the statute.  He didn't press it any further and I confirmed that when I got back to the house.

The 45 day requirement only applies to out of state folks. Your info is a little misleading.

Here's a lengthy post from a few year's back by Capt. Brooks that explains the license requirements.
