Question for some of the recent gubment/military types.  What ever happened to the “NEED TO KNOW” rules about who receives and keeps security clearances?  Why do idiots like Brennan and Comey even have a clearance at any level.  They both were fired.  My experience was always, if you have a need to know, you get the clearance, if you don't have a need to know....you don't.....and when you left that job your clearance stayed.  What's up?

Apparently, at the most senior levels, it's been common practice for the government to extend their clearances indefinitely.  I had the exact same question that you asked.  I do know to get another TS/SCI it costs about $20,000, not to mention the length of time it takes to do the background check.  When I retired, I was told they would leave my clearance open for 1 year, in case I sought employment that required a clearance and then it could be transferred.

Perhaps these guys are left open so they can be consultants and advisors.

I think this is a very poor practice.  Brennen said today that it wouldn't make any difference to him if they pull his clearance, because his opinions are his opinions.  However, I think maintaining a clearance implies a level of access, whether he is actually going to the intell briefs or not.  I don't think of it as a political issue, although the news insisted that it was, because of the few names Sarah Sanders threw out there.

Funny what we find out inadvertently.

I retired from the company I worked for in DC at the end of November.  When they wanted me to come back in February/March of this year as an independent consultant I was told my clearance was still active.  When I questioned it they said a clearance is held open for two years after the person leaves the work force.  Makes sense, as generally a person doesn't become a risk just because they retire and as Hound says reinvestigations are expensive.  But apparently the two year limit is for us paeans, with the Brennan's of the nation retaining the clearance forever.  Looks like DJT may change that dynamic.

I can see if for someone who left the government through retirement, changing positions... but for someone who has been fired?

May be that the practice was started so the high-up muckety mucks could act in an "emeritus" role after leaving office, but like so many such practices what was for the convenience of the government became a convenience for the individual.  And no, if they are fired the government no longer desires to continue the relationship and they shouldn't keep the clearance.

Not being a government type I will say that keeping their clearance for very senior personnel might make sense.  There is a cost for the investigation and as we all know, people rotate in and out of administrations.  John Bolton is a recent example although there are tons more.  And when the next Dem president is elected it would not surprise me to see a handful of former Obama admin officials getting a position in the new administration.  Helpful to hold onto their clearance in that case.

But if someone is terminated for cause they should lose their clearance.  And if they monetize their clearance they should lose it.  Either way this move strikes me as not very helpful to cherry pick Trump critics for this treatment.  If they want to make a change, make it apply to everyone equally.  There is a some rationale for that approach and things can happen in the interim between their last role and when they are proposed for a new role that might impact their clearance.  If they are never re-investigated we would never know.  So change it for anyone that leaves government service or forget this singling out critics.

So Interesting--but mortgage loan officers have to renew licenses ANNUALLY & be fingerprinted,  & credit checked--guess they are higher risk ??

This was further explored in the news today.  According to the media, it is so that former national security leaders can "advise" current job holders in case the need arises.  While that makes sense on the surface, I do think a lot of them exploit the privilege into money making critisisms of the current administration.

A top secret clearance is good for 5 years, then they reinvestigate.  I don't think they ever reinvestigate for a Secret clearnace, unless there is cause.  In the case of a TS, the reinvestigation is very long and they do actually go out and talk to your neighbors and contact people that you list on your form.

Depends on your definition of "right mind".  If you hate this country, want it to fail and like a disastrous foreign policy led by someone willing to lie then she is a perfect choice.  If you define right mind as the opposite of that then no, she would not be on anyone's short list.

I keep seeing this image in my head.

Brennan in a lemonade stand.  Instead of lemonade on the sign above the stand, I see INTELLIGENCE.

The entire stand is surrounded by fake news automatons and dirt purchasing lawyers.

I have seen most of these traitors lie to me on TV.  Sic'em Trump.

Both Comey and McCabe lost security clearance when they were fired. Just another Trump lie to remove their non existent security clearance.

It is known as a Single Scope Background Investigation and indeed, I have had to go through one every five years since I retired from the Air Force.  My current five year stint expires next April, and since I no longer work in a position requiring TS just maybe I won't have to "enjoy" that experience again.
