Squirrels seem to be diigging holes in our lawn.  Anyone know how to discourage them without hurting them and our kitty?

Are you sure it's not armadillos

They are small holes nd I have seen the squirrels digging.so I am assuming it is not an armdillo.

They are hiding acorns, hickory nuts.  In the winter they will retrieve them one at a time.  In spring the ones they miss will sprout oak trees.  Sorry there is nothing you can do short of shooting them or relocating their nests 50 feet up in the trees, lol.

We just cohabitate with them.

I used to think squirrels also, but determined it was chipmunks.  Both are abundant at my house.

Hmmm, we do have some of those, too.

Chipmunks burrow underground so they horde food in larger stashes inside thier burrows. They will actually have more than one stash spot actually.they also eat more vegetation like leaves and such.you can watch them run back home with their little cheeks puffed out with food to take back and stash.they also mate for life and are cute as puppies.i have a pair just outside the door I watch run back and forth across me deck all day.

Squirrels will bury the acorns very shallow and retrieve them as needed so it is most likely squirrels if it is shallow holes that are covered back up.the chipmunks holes are about two inches in diameter and at open and usually right by a rock or ditch or something to help hide it.sqirrells will bury theirs all over the yard in the open. Buy some corn and put it out both of them an they won't need as many acorns.?? the birds will eat the corn also so I get cracked corn for the little guys and birds and while corn for the sweet.a ten dollar back will last a month or two .

Obviously I have learned to co-habitate with them.

We've learned to live with them too.  Both the squirrels and chipmunks like to raid my bird feeder, and this time of year, we see squirrels with Hickory nuts.  A few years ago, we had a few piled up on one of the pillars in the car port.  A squirrel came and ate them all, and got so "drunk" he didn't know what to do, and unfortunately, my coonhound took advantage.

Squirrels are just part of the rodent family.  Shoot'em and eat'em!

Squirrels and chipmunks do not screw up your yard, armadillos certainly do.

Well you need to come over to my yard and tell them.  I have watched them bury nuts and dig them up later.

Every Spring I have a fight with the squirrels about the right to plant.  They dig up my flower pots looking for any nuts they may have buried, even to the point of removing the plant and throwing dirt all over the porch.  And then they have caused expensive repairs to my SUV between them and the chipmunks and other rodents chewing wires in my car.

I've just become philosophical about it and thankful for my landscaper who had the forethought to plant deer resistent plants and bushes.  It's their woods and they just let us live here.  As long as I can keep the birdfeeder stocked with seeds, they let me stay.

...NEVER underestimate the ground squirrel's love for auto wiring....they have practically stripped my truck....very expensive!  I am referring to the small chipmunks?? that dig underground tunnel networks.

They destroyed so much of the wiring in my customer's car that the insurance company totaled it.

One of my nephews had his Porsche and Dodge Ram totaled by chipmunks. Neither was his daily driver which I think is key to them not eating vehicles wiring.
