Today, we lost Roy Clark at age 85. I remember him so well from Hew Haw. I always have enjoyed listening to the words of his most famous song...

My Dad watched Hee Haw on occasion so we had to as well.  I still have all sorts of their songs handy for the right time.  Where oh where are you tonight? was a personal favorite.  That show was way more clever than it was ever given credit for.  BR549

I had the privilege to see him in concert with the United States Air Force Orchestra in DAR Hall, Washington DC.  We were there to see the Air Force Orchestra.  Our seats were about six rows back from the stage.

During intermission, a stage hand brought out a plain, metal, folding card table chair.

When the curtain came up, out walked Roy Clark… with a 12 string guitar. He sat down and began the prelude to Malageña Salerosa.  Hmmmm… I was excited to be available to witness Roy Clark bleeding all over his guitar (the first 4 strings of a 12 string are very thin, tight, metal wires).  Of course he didn’t bleed… but the effect… especially when the orchestra came in was heart pounding!

AND... He had NOT been listed in the program… a surprise treat from the AF.

Roy Clark played 17 different stringed instruments.  There is a video of Roy Clark performing Malageña with the Mexico City Orchestra on top of one of the pyramids at Teotihuacan.  I have seen it twice on TV... but it is not on youtube.  There are several youtube videos of Roy performing Malageña... but, not on a 12 string.

One of the best fall off your chair moments on TV was when Roy Clark and Junior Samples playing the 2 hayseed country boys jes relaxin...Roy says ''I heard that there's a feller that gits run over by a car in New York City ever 3 minits an 43 secunds!'' Junior responds  ''Boy I shore bet he gits tard o'that."

Junior died 34 years ago in 1983. He was from Cumming GA where Lake Lanier is located. My wife spent last week in Cumming...talk about a place that has changed. She remembers it as a sleepy place with just a lake. Now, it is traffic, condos, shopping malls, people and more people....

Did she drive GA 400??  From its start in the vicinity of Buckhead all the way to Cumming has seen massive change and continues today especially around I-285.  At least they eliminated the toll portion.  Picked up my grandson in Alpharetta yesterday and counting tie-up in Auburn when I finally got back was over 3 1/2 hours.  Getting back to Cumming, there was a time when it was noted for it's "white privilege."

Yes...she rented a car at the airport and drove 400. She decided too much traffic and turned the car in a day early cause she did not want to drive from Cumming to the airport to catch an early flight and used UBER to the airport.

When I moved from the North to Atlanta, I was educated that in Cumming blacks could work there but none lived in Cumming. They were expected to leave by sunset. Until I was transferred to Birmingham, I spent almost every weekend at Lanierm and when I moved to Birmingham, I found Lake Martin.

sorry to thear Junior had been gone for that long.  I hoped he had just gone into happy retirement and spending his dotage years fishing.

When I was growing up in the N. GA hills not too far from Cumming just about everybody called it ''Cummins'' except the people who lived there...they called it something close to ''Cumminzez''.  Of course everbody called the big city to the south "Adlanner''.  Thing sure have changed!
