It is now being reported by Andrea Mitchell that Dear Leader's unilateral decision to withdraw US military from Syria was not unilateral after all.  It was decided after Trump and Erdogon discussed the plan in a telephone conversation last week.   Secty Mattis was not able to talk Trump out of a decision that an authoritarian thug apparently talked him into.  If you are a pro-American Kurd living in Syria, make sure your life insurance is paid in full!

Arch, serious question.  Would you be in favor of or against withdrawal of American troops from the Middle East?

Obama built that so he supports it 100%.

Considering the Middle East has been fighting since the begining of time - we will be there forever.  Pull the troops out.

I cannot honestly answer because l do not know all the facts.  Neither did Donald Trump and he refused to listen to the responsible people that do.

If you are a serviceman's parents and your child is stationed in a middle eastern hell hole, you are glad that Mattis is gone.  Wars are what kept him important.  If you think that Afghanistan is ready for democracy, you are delusional.  Syria is a money pit and quagmire, much like the whole middle east.  Mattis was a good general, average SOD.  Trump is finally getting it that the best cabinet hires are those who share his global and domestic vision.

Wonder why they call him, “mad dog”?  Let NATO determine what to do in their part of the world and we’ll do our part.  Bombing the bad guys kills civilians (women and kids).

I bet if you ask 10 Americans why we are leading the war in Syria and Afghanistan, 9.5 could not tell you.

We ignored Afghanistan and the rest of the Middle East and as a result 3,000+ New Yorkers died on 9/11.  I would suggest that we should do whatever we can to ensure those wars don't spill over to our soil.  Thus, keeping 2,000 well trained and well armed American servicemen in Syria to help train the good guys seems like a good investment to me.

My opinion is that pulling the troops from Syria and removing half from Afghanistan is a serious mistake, especially in view of SecDef advising against it.  Iran is waiting to pounce in Syria and the Taliban is waiting in Afghanistan.  Having fought wars for centuries they will just be ever more convinced that the wait is worth it and we don't have the resolve to stick it out over the long haul.

So what’s the end goal?  We have been there forever and they are still killing each other and at times our soldiers.  Trillions of $ that we don’t have.  Sorry, I think he is doing the right thing and we can still help NATO and others as they take the lead.

And we can always just pull an Obama and send out the drones with missles to assassinate people.

And I think that 9/11 had more to do with poor immigration/visa policies/not vetting people before they are allowed into our country.  It is not like they flew a plane from the middle east to the US.

I never thought the Iraq invasion was smart or necessary.  It obviously played havoc with the balance of power in that region.  While not the majority, there are those in the area who are "on our side" and doing things like what Trump wants to remove from Syria gives those groups at least a chance to keep the bad ones at bay.  As I understand it our troops were teaching and arming the good guys so they can hold the others at bay.

It may be that in times past the vast oceans to our east and west and friendly neighbors north and south gave the US a certain geographic advantage.  Not true any more.  And our immigration policies aren't responsible for the terrorist training camps in Afghanistan before we got involved there.

Let's agree to disagree.  Embracing isolationism may delay the inevitable but when the hammer does fall we as a country would be truly sorry we didn't keep the fight "over there".

Speaking as an absolute amateur in this area I am for new approach.  We were keeping the war "over there" in Vietnam years and have ever since.  Eisenhower warned of the military industrial complex and the power it would wield.   Iraq was mistake.  We will only continue to lose our best trying to maintain their forces.  Border security is more important than that training.  Time for new approach.

Be careful what you ask for.  You might get it and it might not be what you hoped for. I agree Iraq was a mistake. I don't agree pulling back and abandoning the few friends we do have is a smart idea.

Let’s declare war at our border and reassign Syria and Afghanistan troop level to the border.

So this week one or more airports were shut down by masses of drones launched into their airspace.  Same could be done against border cities because no wall can be built so high that they can't fly over it.  The term Border Security is thrown around when in practicality what is meant is illegal human crossing prevention. How many miles of shoreline mak up the US border?  We gonna build a wall on every beach?

A wall and increased Border Patrol and ICE presence will certainly deter many Central and South Americans from taking what to this point is a free ride into the US. If Trump is allowed to end the catch and release folly they would be even more deterred from making the attempts.  Using military (other than Guard under a Governor's command) in a law enforcement role creates a slippery slope that could end up in the extreme with a despot trying to use the military to take over the entire company.  Preventing THAT is what the second amendment is all about.

Let's stop and take time to be thankful that we can have this civil disagreement openly and without fear of reprisal.  I understand why you and others feel the way you do but believe we can't just slip into a cocoon and expect not to be attacked where we live and work.

if there is going to be as much support from Trump's ''base'' when the ''gubment'' starts using Imminent Domain to take all the land needed to build the ''vertical slat'' wall?

Nice try Archie!  I would bet they will gladly give an easement to stop people from wandering from Mexico through their property.  I’ve seen documentaries where property owners are fearful for their lives from drug traffickers as well as people smugglers who are very dangerous.  I wonder if China had these problems building the Great Wall?  Lol.

Archie, you might want to do some research.  Property owners have been pleading for help in securing their property.

My cousin has a ranch near the border. They want a wall. All their neighbors want a wall.

They are tired of having to strap on a pistol to round up cows. We do not have to live like that! The Democrooks are more of a danger than the illegals. Illegals only kill us one at a time. Democrats kill a whole country!

Do you think the Mexicans don't know about boats.  Where do we stop stopping them?

If we didn't have dumb president handcuffed to his most extreme supporters we could actually spend the Taxpayer's money on smarter and more effective ways to stop illegals. Let's do that and let the crowdsourcers and Mexicans pay for the stupid wall.

Stop getting all your opinions from liberal media and start thinking.......then you will realize a wall IS the starting place.  That is if you are still capable of thinking for yourself.........which is doubtful.

answer me.  If the wall is the ''starting place'' where is the stopping place?  If the lunatic in the White House decrees it let's extend the wall up the Pacific coast to at Least Santa Ana and up the Gulf to Galveston Island...yeah, to hell with the citizens with beachfront houses and to hell with the budget...just do it!!  You and your fellow travelers in blinders will jump and shout their approval just as you would if Trump in fact had shot somebody on 5 th Ave.  The lemmings are all lining up behind the the leader to rush over the cliff!

1. At least with boats we are not having to secure thousands of miles of border.  They are not planning to row to Washington State.

2. coast guard.
