Any local insights on the letter posted from Kieth Hirt pertaining to potential sale of property that used to be Traditions course?

I really enjoy Coppers Grill. We had lunch there yesterday. The side salad is he best and one of my main reason for going back. Yesterday I ordered the half club sandwich with a salad only to be told they no longer have 1000 island dressing. I asked the server why and she said they wanted to add some other healthier and and more upscale dressings. This blew my mind. Add all you want but why would you 86 the most popular dressing in the world? Three out of 4 of us ordered the salad and wanted 1000 Island. The server said she has folks asking for it every day. They make a great salad but if I can't get it with the dressing I want why go back?

Thiis really mind boggling to me. Can anyone offer any insight into this move?

Thousand Island aside......I think he may have bigger issues.

Reducing traffic your biggest revenue generator is a huge issue. None of the 4 of us plan to go back unless we can get what we like. I used to enjoy the restaurant but couldn't care any less about the golf course. Why apologize, beg and grovel to folks who obviously have spoken with their feet and money that they don't really care about golf in numbers great enough to be viable. He should sell the waterfront if he needs cash and to hell with those that don't like the idea. Maybe then he can afford to mkthe 1000 Island again, or even hire some management that wouldn't make such a bone headed decison.

Of course this is just my opinion but from what I was told I am not alone in these sentiments.

We bought here 2.5 years ago and ate at Coppers once a month.  It was OK then, not great.  We ate at Oscars or Niffers twice a week.  When the chef left to take over Judy's the food quality fell fast.  Now it sucks.  We ate there three times in 2018. Once my wife wanted salad for lunch and asked if instead of half sandwich and small salad could she get 2 small salads only.  The chef's answer was no.  Pretty inflexible for a restaurant that only had people at 2 other tables and this was a Friday at 12:30.  We decided to try dinner back in November.  The TV in the dining room was so loud that we moved to the bar.

When we first bought our house here, in 2016, I inquired about a social membership for meals only, similar to many other clubs around the country.  The cost was $800.00.  I did not join.

Hire a decent chef and I'll stop driving to the Waverly and Auburn restaurants so much.

Agreed. It's not the same and no 1000 Island was just the straw that broke the camels back. Summer before last we went there 2-3 a month. Last summer only about once a month, this summer ZERO times a month it look like. Last year I ordered grouper a was served what was most likely talipia. It wasn't as big as the twenty dollar bill it took to pay for it and was about as thick as as a quarter.

I love the house made dressings, the cilantro lime is my favorite.

Not a huge surprise to me.  My wife and I play the course whenever we can but we don't live in Sillwaters.  We did get an RTJ card last year and that makes Grand National cheaper than Stillwaters and in my opinion, it is a much better course.  I very much appreciate all the work done to improve Stillwaters.  In the past and prior to the current operators, it was in terrible shape and not worth anywhere close to what they charged.  We didn't get the membership because we are not there much in the winter but if we lived there year round we would probably do it.  But right now it doesn't make sense.

I feel for the property owners that bought a home believing they were getting a house on a golf course.  However, this isn't a new problem with golf course developments and obviously the current operators are not the ones that created this problem.  They have taken on quite a task and unfortunately it sounds like it has become financially untenable for them to continue with the status quo.  So in the hope of staying afloat they are considering a very difficult decision.  Owners will have to decide if they want to derail the restructuring but they may find that by doing so they will make things worse.  Easy for me to say and I can certainly understand whatever they decide to do in light of this current news.

I agree. The 1000 Island was great too. But apperently not upscale enough for the current chef/management. I've eaten in some nice places and nef been told I couldn't get 1000 Island except at olive garden where they only have their house dressing, Which I also buy at Walmart for home when we have pasta dishes. Obviously it seems petty to randyman but I will go where I can get what I want. Hopefully they will realize the error and correct it, or maybe not.

Lifer, you could always take your own.  I'm serious, because I carry around a jar of dijon mustard with me.  One of the restaurants we frequent only has yellow mustard, so I started taking my own.   Restaurants no longer care what their customers like; I thnk that is more the answer than thousand Island not being "high brow" enough.  Crazy, isn't it?

That is an option but their house made dressing was great. The server seemed frustrated because she is the one facing the customer and trying to explain a stupid decision. I just read harbor docks is closing. They are another place that never seemed to grasp the concept of customer service IMO.

Can't comment on HD - I heard it was closing.  We went there once or twice year ago, but with the stoires I heard about it, I wasn't inclined to return.  It does seem silly to discontinue something that people are ordering = particuarly somethign like salad dressiing that takes about 5 minutes to whip up.

The following is my personal opinion/perspective.

I own one of those houses… and two parcels on the Legends Course.  The property was represented as “on the golf course.”   The truth is, my property is on a dead golf course where very little maintenance is rendered.  It the last two years Keith has had it brush hogged twice.

It is my understanding that to get it rezoned (as Zettler might be able to clarify) ALL property owners on the Legends Course would have to agree to the rezoning.  Unless it is going to be rezoned “green space -NO development”, I do not foresee any condition under which I would agree to rezoning.

Perhaps Keith can break up the Legends and sell off the attractive pieces.  But, he or the buyer would still have to get it rezoned.

* * * * *

When Keith bought the courses, he promised to restore the “Traditions Course” and then perhaps later, the Legends course.  He did well the first year.  After that, the maintenance seemed to be “token” effort.  I am NOT a good golfer and the Traditions Course is very challenging.  Every change he has made to that course in the last two years has been harder on my (already suffering) golf game.

I joined the club when Keith took over.  But, then it seems to me that he put a significant portion of the golfers’ (my) money into his “night club.”  I didn’t want to invest in a night club.  So, I dropped my membership last year.

 I too, bought an RTJ card.  It’s worth it!  And it’s good on ALL RTJ courses.

* * * * *

The restaurant was immediately opened and improved when Keith took over.  That hasn’t prevailed.  The current menu and kitchen are mediocre and, despite a very friendly server staff, disappointing.  I don’t like slow and cold food.  I NEVER choose Copper’s anymore (sometimes I go by invitation).  If I want fine dining, I go into Auburn/Opelika.  We used to go at least once a week.  Now, we don’t average once a month (and then, only when invited by someone else).

Eating at Copper’s on weekends is especially challenging.  Too loud!  It’s a night club… NOT a restaurant.  Bar food is good – drinks are standard - restaurant meat is edible when it’s warm. I live a mile from Copper's. On warm weekend nights I can hear the loud music from the night club... even with my windows closed.

* * * * *

I do feel sorry for Keith.  He’s a great guy.  I know it’s "just business."  But, I’m retired and I just don’t have extra money to throw at The Traditions and Copper’s.
