I am not that far left to buy into all that the far left is proposing. I believe in a balanced budget. Propose it and pay for it. Pay down the debt. I am waiting to be able to post that I am pleased with Trump and his policies to pay down on the debt.

We are probably not that far apart until it comes to social issues. I don't believe anyone should live under a bridge or in a car. We are not a 3rd world country. ?

The government, through FEMA, is always there for the Right when there is a natural disaster. The Right doesn't scream Big Government when they are flooded or when a hurricane hits. No, they take whatever welfare FEMA offers. That is America...we help each other.?

I moved to the Left when I worked in Philadelphia and rode the train to work. In the bowels of the subway system,  I saw many people whose home consisted of a refrigerator box and a blanket with a rusted out grocery cart. They were there cause of metal issues and trauma from growing up in poverty.

It tough to be homeless when the temp drops down to the 20s. They go to the hospital and say they are sick..receive a bed and some hot meals for a day or two. You and I pay for those stays. They get ill from living in a dirty environment and use the emergency room over and over. You and I pay for it.

Why not rent them an apartment and get them off the street? Provide them medical treatment and food stamps. The cost will be less than the cost of the numerous emergency room visits. Would the Right support this? Would the left support it? Would the private sector support it? The answer is yes to all 3. The Right likes it cause it saves money by improving their health and cutting down expensive hospital emergency visits, the Left likes it cause it helps the poor, and big business likes it because it helps to control medical costs and future premium increases.

Too bad, we have become a country so divided. At least, there was a wall to tear down in Germany to bring the people together. I wonder if there is hope for us? Sadly, it may take another World War for the people of this great country to heal and come together and behave as Americans.

We are, afterall, supposed to be "one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for ALL".

It is time to go fishing.

Interesting post and some interesting realizations you have made.  First, it seems that you are beginning to realize that supporting dimokraps is not “you”, and in fact it is embarrassing to admit you are a DIMOKRAP.  Second, you need to realize that the poor, worthless humans in America are largely the fault of the liberal idiots who continue to support their chosen lifestyle with freebies.  Every human in America CAN improve themselves by simply getting up out of the gutter and doing something to improve themselves—-called work.  All gubment freebie programs should require work of some kind.  Your example of useless humans going to the ER for freebies cause they have nowhere else to go is typical BS of liberals.  I happened to watch hordes of Vietnamese come to the US in the middle 70s with absolutely nothing but the clothes on their backs, and in a matter of a few years, they spoke English, learned a trade, made sure their kids were excelling in school, and are today great, contributing citizens.  Yet you choose to cry for those useless humans who choose to be useless.  If humans in America choose to be worthless, druggie, homeless, animals, so be it..........they don’t deserve help.

Just think about the millions of Europeans after WWII who were homeless, foodless, healthcareless, etc....those who chose to survive did so.  Life ain’t free, you have to earn it and contribute something.....

Goof, you have spent years supporting a worthless group called dimokraps.  Give it up.  Obviously, you have realized this or you wouldn’t have made your post.  You will be welcomed into a group best known as AMERICANS anytime you wish acceptance!!

Fascinating.  Thanks for sharing. Hopefully the US will come to it's senses but I worry we won't.

I am encouraged by much of what you have summarized in your post. And I also agree with much of what Wix describes regarding ways to approach this "national" problem. Like you, I sympathize with those who are living under bridges, in a car, in tents up and down the roadways of California, standing on street corners with signs begging for help, and the like. However, I don't believe that showing compassion for them by providing a "couple" of bucks for a meal, or other short term help does much but allow a continuation of the problem.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    I think that the ways our government has gone about dealing with the types of problems we see in America today have seriously exacerbated the problem. There are so many different "facets" that contribute to the types of problems in our society today that can almost cause anyone to "throw in the towel". First, we are a "large" Nation that has tried to"blend" a wide "nationalityof peoples" into an "ideal" government that "satisfies" the "wants" of each "individual group". The use of the word "racists" is thrown around to draw undue attention to almost every problem that arises. I hope to post more on this subject at a later date.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     One of the more "serious" situations that exists today is the significant "decrease" in the number of homes where there is not a "father figure" present to help share the monumental responsibilities that are needed by both a father and mother to create a desirable and functional family lifestyle. The need for "both" parents to be present to provide discipline, encouragement, educational goals, financial needs, and the like cannot be overlooked. When I Googled "parents" I found a list of 50 responsible things that parents do or don't do in parenting their children. From my experience, the experience of my two sons and their families, and the experience I see from most everyone around me, it is not easy to "navigate" even when two incomes aere available.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I do agree that "government" should extend assistance to those in need who are not physically or mentally able to care for themselves, however, I agree with Wix that those who are physically able should be required to work. I don't believe that anyone that is able is going to go hungry or stand by and watch their family go hungry. Also, there are numerous agencies locally, statewide, and nationally that provide untold amounts of  help and assistance for those with true needs.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Like Wix, over my many years I have witnessed many people who have come to this Country with not much more than the clothes on their back, but with hope, desire, and perserverance to reach amazing heights. My lady Dermatoligist came here from Vietnam, as did her husband who is an Orthopedist. Their son and their daughter are presently in medical school. It takes guts and grit to succeed to those levels. Also, I don't dislike or hate others who come to America if they follow immigration laws and become legal citizens. My great grandmother was Mexican.

Here here Wix, spot on.

Let's talk about ideas, not each other.

I'll go fishing with goofy fish. He has just met my minimum sanity criteria for a fishing buddy.

Congratulations.  Shortbus has complimented Goofy for the first time.

Back in the 70's there was a woman named Mary (I forgot her last name) up in N Y who was 'mentally challenged" whoes family attempted to put her in a mental institution. She had enough sense to contact the good old ACLU. They took her case and fought it all the way to the supreme court and  got some rather restrictive rules about incarceration of the mentially ill. Now we have to prove someone is a danger to himself or others.

In about 2 years the population of mental institutions dropped some 75%. Most were not a threat but just could not function and some could as long as they got their meds. These folks were just dumped out on the street to get themselves a nice carboard box to live under a bridge! When the ACLU saw the result of their disaster they said, "Blame Regan. It happened on his watch."

Thank yoy ACLU! Please go help our enemies!

I read, with great interest, Fishy’s post.  And I find myself agreeing in principle with much of what he… YOU, FISHY… posted.

Homelessness is a peculiar condition.  For the most part, it is voluntary… because, there is always a hand reaching down into the gutter to help one of them to get up and out.  And yet… they mostly refuse.

A case in point:  A decade ago, when I was S-3 of the 3rd Brigade of the Tennessee State Guard, we hosted an annual “Veterans’ Stand-down” in the Knoxville region.  We sent buses out into the city and surrounds to pick up homeless veterans.  They boarded the buses willingly.  We brought them to a substantial, fenced compound/campus sponsored by a local business. There… for three days… we fed them and supplemented or replaced their clothing (if they wished).  We replaced their blankets and/or sleeping bags.  Their clothing was laundered and returned. They were given toiletries.  They bathed or showered. We provided medical and dental exams… and if feasible… onsite treatment.  Our volunteer psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and social workers counseled them… if they would accept such.  Our team offered to help them find work.  We scheduled the stand-down during football season and so provided wide screen television for viewing. AND, we (TSG) veterans sat with them at meals… and talked with them in both “lies and war stories” and in serious topics… whatever each wanted to talk about.

Not one of them was ever non-cooperative, belligerent, or even discourteous.

And when the stand-down was over, we bused them back to wherever each wanted.  THEY MOSTLY WANTED TO BE BACK ON THE STREET !

Neither you nor I can relate to that.  Someone… somewhere… loves (or is a least concerned) about each one of those veterans.  But the line between them and their loved ones… and us… is broken.

Each of them cost FAR LESS than an illegal immigrant.  Each of them deserves our care and concern.  To our veterans we should focus our priorities.  (I will give you a hint: many of them were Viet Nam vets.)

Have seen similar myself.  Personal story - sitting at a McDonalds and had a guy come up to me with a pitiful story about how he had not eaten in several days and just needed a bite.  At the time the local McD's was doing a buy one get one free Big Macs and was going to take it home to the kids.  So when he started with his story I told him you know today is your lucky day - here is a burger untouched you can have.  He told me to go F myself and went on about a 10 minute request for money - Some people are where they are by choice, the ones that are where they are by circumstances there are plenty of people willing to help.

Also some local homeless my mother and a church had sheltered, clothed, and had attaranged for them to get jobs in the community.  The nice clothes were sold pretty quick and they were back in their rags and begging - because they made more money at it.

While I find Gfs sentiment in the right place to help someone with a hand up, they have to "step up" or it does not matter how much you help someone if they do not want to better themselves they will stay where they are and keep looking for the hand outs.

Maybe if we did not have so many migrants coming across then some of these homeless could build decks, paint or pick fruit. At least they would be protected by labor laws and legal wages.

From your post, I assume you support tax funded places for the mental ill to live. Finally, you and I agree on something.
