His lawyers probably convinced him he was screwed and the best he can hope for is to plea to some lesser charge.  The phony hate crime report was bad enough but he woud probably get away with a slap on the wrist.  But I am betting they also have him for the letter which is a bit more problematic because he used the U.S. Mail which gets the Feds involved.  That is not going to go away as easily.  

I will say I am joyful that this was a hoax and I have zero sympathy for this guy and hopes he ends up spending time in prison.  One reason is that there are a great many more fake hate crimes each year than real ones and this is a disservice to those that are actual victims.  They will not be believed as readily because of all these fake stories.  Second reason is his interview with Robin Roberts.  I realize he is an actor but it takes a true narcissistic sociopath to say some of the things he said in that interview knowing full well he was lying through his teeth (and please Goofy, don't bore us to death with a post about Trump's lies).  Finally, I find it particularly vile that he tried to pin this on Trump supporters and MAGA hats.  As we have seen recently there are numerous hate-filled attacks of people wearing these hats, including the Covington Catholic kids, the numerous videos of verbal harassment and the idiot in Tennessee that pulled a gun and threatening to shoot a guy wearing one.  He obviously suffers from TDS and I am worried that Goofy and the others will get the wrong idea and get caught up in a hoax or threaten violence to some old guy wearing a hat they don't like.  Seek help TDS sufferers, before you end up doing your own perp walk.

given that Chicago is bankrupt, & the man hours spent on this hoax & extraneous expenses --this 'famous' guy should not only be prosecuted but make restituition for those monies; same should apply to anyone reporting fake crimes//911 calls, etc.

At least for the false police report.  If they determine he also sent the letter then he may be in for Federal charges.  Interestingly this is not his first rodeo in that regard.  In 2007 he was stopped for DUI and gave a false name to police.  And even worse, he gave his younger brother's name.  Nice...... 

Now let's all guess what the govt media's take will be.  Mine is that it will be all about our "pouncing" on this hoax.  You watch, all the news will be about that and not the actual crime or the abject lies the guy told or all the wasted police resources.  They will try to make the guy a victim.  Oh poor Jussie, if America weren't so mean and hateful toward blacks and gays he would have never had to resort to this elaborate hoax.  If Trump didn't spew hate and lies every day....blah, blah, blah.  Watch and see.......

Police said in a press conference hours later that Smollett sent a fake letter to himself and staged a hate crime attack in Chicago because he was "dissatisfied with his salary."

That was the most interesting part of the presser by CPD.  That is the first time it seems to have confirmed he did the letter as well.  This is much more problematic for him because that's a Federal charge because it involved using the U.S. mail.  That portion of the charges are going to be harder for him. 

Either way, if you are going to do something this mind numbingly dumb it is best to check as many identity politics boxes so Jussie has several going for him, black, gay, liberal, actor.  He would have been smart to come out as transgender and start dressing like a woman and have a DNA test so he can claim native American as well along with Fauxahontas.
