If this goes to trial I hope the jurors try to put themselves in this guy’s shoes.

I think this is a horrible idea and will have all sorts of unintended consequences.  Who wants to bet the plaintiff's lawyers pushed the DA to do this to strengthen their cases?  The guy was fired and rightly so. He has been publicly shamed a million times and rightly so.  But charged with a crime?!?!?  Not the right thing to do.

Broward County Sheriff Israel was fired for covering up details of Parkland murders.  If you look at photo of deputy Peterson charged, you will see an old, very over weight, man, who was probably assigned to Parkland because he was worthless elsewhere and just waiting in a Cush job for retirement day.  Anyway, he failed in every detail of his job, and kids probably died as a result.  His job was to protect, not hide and point!  Let him get off and we may all suffer.

He lied to investigators and CCTV proved he was lying.

I can somewhat see the culpable negligence, the child neglect I am on the fence about.

When seconds count, the police are minutes away is the old saying.  He was onsite, stood around while hearing the gunshots, and stoped others from entering according to reports for up to 15 minutes before officers went in anyway while gunshots were still heard.

It may serve as a reminder to other officers of the motto that used to be on cars "To serve and protect"

I get your point and if he was being charged for lying to investigators that's one thing.  But now the police are going to be held criminally liable for their judgement or lack of good judgement?  The problem here is that while this one seems like a solid case, the next ones maybe not so much.  So now police officers in a scary situation not only have to worry about being fired or sued for their decisions, they also have to be worried about being criminally charged if they make a bad decision that results in someone being killed by a perp.

So the SWAT team decides to wait to breach a hostage situation and people inside die.  Are they criminally negligent?  All it takes is a DA who doesn't like the police or has an axe to grind and they get an indictment.  I'm sorry, but this is still a very bad idea even given the circumstances which we all agree are egregious.

Agreed - same could be said aout the school system - they were negligent as well in that they had rules that kept this kid off of law inforcement radar.  It is a slippery slope.  Like I said I can see the lying to investigators.

I can somewhat see culpable as he reportadly stopped others from going in.

Neglect I think is a stretch, but that is what prosectors do, they charge anything and everything knowning they will have a hard time proving some of it, but hope to get a guilty plea to reduce charges.

In almost every instance the shooter stops the instant he starts to recieve return fire! When seconds count, the police are minutes away!

I believe if they stopped giving these perps all that TV time giving the fame they crave. Indeed, the one in New Zeland (I believe) streamed it live. Report the event. Do not give the perps name. Don't interview everyone who knew him. That, I believe, would reduce one of the big reasond these nuts do these things just to go out as spectacutlarly as possible. Why else would they gun down people they never met?

If they did not get fame and recognition for it, I do believe it would not happen as often.  Personally after appropriate court appeals a guillitean on the court house lawn would make some think twice.

I wonder if it would?  These people know they are going to die -they plan for it and they want to go down in a blaze of glory.  They try to kill as many people as they can, because they want to be the worst mass killers in history.

You know, I don't ever think anyone knows how they will react to a situation until they are in it.  This is also true in the military.  So this guy gets under fire and he is likely scared out of his mind.  Most of us want him to run into that building and confront the shooter, but he didn't.  I don't know if it is child negligence.  He failed to perform his duties.  He lied to investigators.  He is notorious, and his life is probaby ruined.  Don't imagine a day goes by when he doesn't think about it.  Jail time - certainly, but piling on the charges is just a political move by the DA to appease the parents.

Put a bag over their head and drop the blade - much cheaper then housing them for 50+ years - either that or let them farm old school to earn their keep / feed themselves.  Sadly earning/paying your own way is considered cruel and inhumane.
