So it seems that my suggestion that people do what I did and leave Fakebook is not going to happen....yet.  So this latest example of their censorship is leading me to lean toward thinking social media and search engines will need to be regulated as a public utility.  They have become so big and powerful and thoroughly corrupted by their ideological bias that they probably need to be regulated.  They have become Big Brother.

So what got me to this point?  The following quote by St. Augustine has been deemed by their algorithm to be hate speech.  Judge for yourselves.  If you are still on Fakebook try to post it and see what happens.

Let us never assume that if we live good lives we will be without sin; our lives should be praised only when we continue to beg for pardon. But men are hopeless creatures, and the less they concentrate on their own sins, the more interested they become in the sins of others. They seek to criticize, not to correct. Unable to excuse themselves, they are ready to accuse others.

There is no privacy on social media.  So when you use it, you know that going in.  I've had all of my personal data released in major data hacks at least 4 times, so I no longer worry about.  But yes, everyone knows that FB monitors posts and some that they don't care for will be deleted or just magically disappear.

Anyone who shops online, uses social media, does research on line, etc should no that you have no privacy at all.  You are on cameras on the street, in your home, on the cell phone and on social media.  It's just what you give up when you take on technology.

In your home?

Reply to Harry...

One of the first things I do with a laptop is put a piece of black tape over the camera.  But think about it...that cell phone camera that allows you to take beautiful pictures can be controlled from afar.  Your cell phone is a computer that is connected to the internet...Apple, Samsung, and other cell phone manufacturers write the software code that is installed on them and can easily include code that instructs the camera and microphone to activate and send the picture and voice wherever they like.  So Hound is right when she says "in homes".

Sounds a bit paranoid

As you wish, but the threat and capability are real.

Google Siri called the cops on me or alexa spying -  anything voice activated in your home is not always a good thing.

I too put tape over my camera and turn off my microphone until I need it.  Plenty of stories about people sitting at their computer and suddenly noticing their camera is on because someone is using it remotely.  There are webistes out there that stream cameras that they hacked into.  Go to the tech world and you will see how many of them cover up their cameras.  They know what is possible and what is going on.

And for those who have devices like Alexa, you are completely nuts.  You literally have no control over what they are doing.  When I go into someone's house and they have one of these devices I ask them to unplug it while I'm there.  And no, it's not me worrying about what I'm saying.  It's about basic privacy.

Go and do a search for websites that stream people whose camera's they have hacked into.  It's only paranoia if it isn't happening.....and it surely is.

It was bad enough when I looked at something on a website and then it showed up on my FB.  But I have found that sometimes I'm only thinking about something and it shows up on my FB page.  That is really scary.

Back in the day, crazy people would call the NSA or the CIA and complain that they implanted a device while they were at the dentist that controlled their thoughts  or gave them signals to follow and begged the agencies to turn them off.  (Sometimes they would play along and tell them that the devices had been turned off)  (true story).

I wouldn't trade my Navigation system in my car because it makes life so much easier - but I know it tracks where I go.  And all those places with the free wifi, are checking you in.  Costco is following me by my membership number and knows exactly how often I visit and what I buy.  (yesterday, the register messed up my reciept I needed to get out of the door.  They went into a back room and printed out a sheet of everything I bought that day and I was escorted to the door by a customer service rep).

Oh, and that new app that shows you how you will look when you get old (no, not the mirror, there is now an app), was developed by a Russian company, and while it claims it is deleting the pictures within 2 days, who knows what they do with it?

It can make you paranoid if you spend too much time thinking about it, but this is our new reality.

Did I read that correctly. You are thinking of something and it shows up on Facebook. You must have a much higher end electronic device than me.

I can't explain it.

Is there a chance you discussed it with hubby?  My friend in Charleston was discussing somethoing with his daughters and shortly thereafter, even though he had never entered that thought on line, it showed up as an advertisement the necxt time he logged on.

Harry, if you have an iPhone, iPad, or any other Apple device you are being listened to.  Same goes for Amazon's Alexa...if she is listening for you to give her commands what keeps her from listening to anything else being said in your house?  And don't even think Google's version of the "assistant" is going to be any less intrusive.  The threat and capability are real, and until the buying public demands change you will contiually be "raped" of your privacy.

I am fully aware that the capability is there but that is as far as it goes for me.
