Summer takes a toll on them. Surface temps near 90 degrees results in low oxygen levels to support these larger fish.  They run deeper in the summer but even in deeper water it can be tough to find oxygen rich water. Also most that are caught and released this time of year will die.  The stress of a fight along with the high surface temp and low oxygen is a death sentence.

Link to some comments regarding catch and release during the summer. Auburn has done studies on this on Martin and their conclusions are the same. I doubt the catch and release mortality rate is 100% but I’m sure it’s higher in the later summer months
