anybody know the current rules for property taxes on folks aged 65 and over?  Homestead exemption?

I talked to them about homestead exemption but since it’s not my principal home couldn’t do it.Havent looked into over 65 yet but my wife and I are both over 65.

You pay.  65 is exempt from State portion, but that is the smaller than the county portion.

all of the above is true. I would also recommend (especially soon after a purchase) that no matter what county you are in, that you check the property tax class of your home. Even if it is not your homestead, a second home (non commercial) should still be lower than a commercial rate. Some times after a purchase or exchange the county mis-categorizes it and if it is not properly done, your property taxes might be too high.

Thanks.  We close on our old house in Shelby county and will make the lake place our home stead.  I plan to go to the courthouse in wetumpka on the first.  I think you maybe right on the taxes since we pay more on the lake house than the Shelby countyhouse.  Of course car tags are three times Elmore county in Shelby.
