Does anyone know if Lake Martin has been tested for the Blue/green Algae that is posing a threat to dogs?  If you have not heard, there is an algae bloom in frush water lakes, ponds, streams that if ingested by your dog, will kill the dog within a few hours.  From what I have read, the only way to be sure it is not present is for the water to be tested.  I haven't heard of any problems yet in Central Alabama, but a number of dogs have died in other southern states.

My daughters were talking about this last night.  They have a friend whose dog almost died from it.  Let's hope its not in Lake Martin because we are headed there this weekend and our dog loves to swim.  I don't think it should be a problem at Lake Martin as it requires warm, stagnant water and lots of phosporus from fertilizers.  It's more of a concern with stagnant ponds.  Either way, its good to keep dogs away from areas with lots of algae, especially if its blue-green in color.

Speaking of fertilizer.. Wonder if all those people with the beautiful lawns and all the development around the lake will kill our beautiful water. Seems greener than before the 2007 drought.

I don't know.  Maybe it's not a problem in Lake Martin.  At least that is what I am hoping.

Regarding the run off of fertilizers and chemicals - I don't have anything like that applied to my lawn.  One reason is that I don't want it to run off in the lake, and another is that my dogs go out onto our lawn and I don't want them exposed to those kind of chemicals.  I know that they are advertised to be pet safe, but I don't want to take the chance.

All, I just saw this on the forum (I'm new to the forum) and would like to respond for Lake Watch of Lake Martin. We responded to the reports of dogs dying in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas after contact with water that had toxic algal blooms by posting lots of info on aids to identyfing toxic algae blooms and how to keep you and your pet safe. To access the info, google: lake watch of lake martin facebook, or click on this link:  Lake Watch of Lake Martin Facebook Page .

And Talullahound is correct, thus far toxic algal blooms have not been a problem in Lake Martin. I have not heard of toxic algal bloom problems in the state, but if you hear of or observe a bloom please let me/Lake Watch know. We don't test for toxic algae since we don't have the capabilities to do so (we are an all-volunteer organization) and it has never been an issue in our lake - hopefully it will stay that way.  If you have any questions to pose to Lake Watch, please don't hesitate to contact us: Lake Watch Contact . And kudos to Talullahound for avoiding fertilizers (nutrients from fertilizers, wastewater treatment plants, livestock poop, and other sources), since they are a major factor in polluting our Treasured Alabama Lake and causing algae blooms.

I think it's all empty talk! There are NO exact figures and reliable evidence about the dangers and effects of these algae on dogs!
