Why does Trump say things like this when they are so untrue?

"Kim Jong Un — who I’ve gotten to know extremely well; the first lady has gotten to know Kim Jong Un, and I think she’d agree with me — he is a man with a country that has tremendous potential,” Trump said Monday morning.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham then issued a clarification stating that the first lady and North Korean leader did not know each other personally as Trump had suggested.

One can only hope there is method to the madness...if you have lived in Korea you understand over-the-top compliments and flowery words are accepted and expected diplomatic terms.  It could well be that DJT knows that and is keeping all his options open by using their expected terms.  I don't for a minute believe he believes what he says to and about Little Rocket Man. He may be a lot of things but he is not stupid.  I am withholding judgement until I see the results.  As Hound said appearances can be deceiving.

You raise an interesting point about Obama.  Before the WH he lived in a nice house, but after the WH, he buys and $8.7M house in Washington and now a multimillion dollar mansion on Martha's Vineyard.  Hmm wonder where all that money came from.  I know speaking engagements pay well, and the royalties on the books, but if he wasn't a millionaire when he entered the WH, he sure is now.

I think Trump is playing a game with Kim.  I think Hodja is right - those flowery words of the part of the diplomatic dance.  Trump obviously believes it is better that Kim regard him as a trusted friend, than as his enemy.  And appearances don't usually tell the whole story of what is going on behind the scenes.
